In 1995, after a twenty-year love affair with Italy, Alan Epstein fulfilled his dream to live in Rome with his wife and two sons. In As the Romans Do, he celebrates daily life in his dramatic, ancient city that formed the hub of a far-flung empire and introduced Mediterranean culture to the rest of the world.

Alan dreamed of living in Rome for over 20 years. When he married Diane, he found a partner who shared his passion for Italy. They soon made a plan to follow their dream, researching schools and drawing up a business plan. Even with a plan, they faced challenges once they moved to Italy with their two small children. They had car accidents and their original business failed. However, Alan says that these obstacles and knowing he's followed his dream have made him a more tolerant person. Alan remarks, to live among the beauty and culture of Italy "makes his soul feel good."
