Category Image Carl Sagan's Cosmos

from the billions-and-billions dept.

I loved and still love watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos.  It was a TV show that my dad and I watched on PBS.  It was and still is intriguing to me what human imagination can be inspired by.

But of course, this is an article in the religion section of my blog.  Why is that?  Because this is a religion.  I enjoy listening to and reading things by Carl Sagan.  I read Contact several times.  My opinion of Carl Sagan is that he was highly religious, but the religion is science.

It is a highly intellectual religion, this science.  Many people get rather offended when science is referred to as religion.  But what belief system can one have with statements like these spoken by Mr. Sagan?

"We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself."

"In the Milky Way Galaxy, there may be many world where matter has grown to conscienceness."

"We are the legacy of 15 billion years of cosmic evolution."

"...equally important was the invention ... of sex; it was stumbled upon by the microbes."

All I'm saying is that these are not statements based on observation.

I guess it always comes down to the belief of either "namaste" or "imago dai" (where "namaste" asserts that we are all God, and "imago dai" asserts we are made in God's image and likeness).
