just realized why perhaps Walt was at the other terminal on the island chatting
with his Dad, and why perhaps "the others" kidnapped all of the
children.
The other facility had a near mishap, perhaps their blast doors have partially closed, which prevents adults from entering the dome to access the terminal. Only children are small enough to get in there and enter the code. That's why Alex was stolen from Danielle 16 years earlier. That's why the children were stolen from the tail section survivors. And that's why they attempted to steal Claire's baby, and of course Walt.
In other words, the other terminal is in a similar setup as the Swan facility, but the code is inaccessible by adults.
Now imagine that only Alex can enter the code for years on end. She has to get in there every 108 minutes. She's also getting a little too big so maybe she's actually stuck inside. So "the others" are desperate to find replacements because she's going nuts.
As for the reason they have to enter the code; I think it's just a power source that will fail if they don't. When the timer expires, and they fail to enter the code, the blast doors close, and maybe there's an explosion confined to the dome.

[Update 01/18/2005]: It looks as if Alex may not be trapped like I theorize, since someone named Alex brings Kate over to Jack in today's episode, "The Hunting Party." But for now, the rest of my theory still holds up.
