XL2K intends to ease the use of Excel data in Keynote presentations. Crush your numbers in Excel and export them to Keynote in one click.
Keynote is the most elegant, high-quality, professional presentation software. However, in it's version 1.x, it is not ideal to re-use existing data such as Excel spreadsheets. Therefore, with the help of the AppleScript language and the XCode application (bundled in Mac OS X V10.3 Panther), I have developed a simple utility, which enables customers to easily move their data from Microsoft Excel to Apple Keynote.
Here is an example of an original Excel spreadsheet and the result in Keynote.
Manual
There are 3 easy steps to use XL2K:
- Open Excel and select your table of data
- Launch XL2K (or select it) and choose in the main window whether you want to create just a chart slide, juts a table slide, or the 2 slides altogether.
- Clik on the buttons to choose your graph type.
You also choose in the Preferences several options, like the size of the table, whether you want to give a specific name to the Keynote file, etc.
Known bugs
There are still a few annoying bugs in this version 1.0, and I am working on solving them. But it is always good to know that some things do not work:
- XL2K does not work on localized systems using the comma (,) as a decimal separator. To solve this, open your System Preferences, International pane, Formats tab, and choose the period (.) as the decimal separator
- Apparently, when numbers in Excel are formatted as "currency" (with no other option), they are NOT taken into account when creating a chart slide (you get a "0" instead of the expected value). The workaround is to go in the "Format Cell" option of Excel and change one parameter of the cell currency format (like putting the currency sign before rather than after the number). No issue with the table slide
- No support for the "Bold" or "Italic" fonts... or colors of the Excel table. You can however, since version 1.5, choose the text color and the slides abckground color in the Preferences.
- No support for Excel merged cells or multiple selection. You will get an eror message. The workaround is to deselect the "merge cells" option in Excel
