father's day in moscow


today we did little of real consequence: just a few groceries and books in the morning, and red square in the afternoon, followed by a dinner at akademia.

dacha outing


today's one main event was a generous offer to enjoy a picnic at simon saradzhyan's uncle's dacha about 20 kilometers northwest of moscow.

the armory and dinner at elizabeth messud's


today we organized ourselves and made it out of the house in time to get tickets to the kremlin's armory collection of art treasures. in the evening we were guests at elizabeth messud's new home in moscow, where we enjoyed a wonderful meal while ingrid and sam played with elizabeth and vasya's children.

a beautiful day


we had two interviews today: one in the morning with a former journalist for red star, russia's pre-eminent military newspaper and, in the afternoon, an interview with a representative from a helsinki human rights group.

a hard day


two interviews today, the first great the second less so. this afternoon we tried moscow sushi and then, taking some local advice, made our way to detski mir to try and find an electric razor.

longbeard at the carnegie center moscow


our main job today was an interview at the moscow office of the carnegie center--that, and the usual mundane-but-necessary getting of groceries and maintaining of the apartment. it rained most of the day.

a mellow day of shopping


it's a holiday today in russia which means everything's open but no one's available for interviews. we had no plan save perhaps a bit of recuperation from yesterday. we spent the day shopping.

gorky park


today russia celebrated its independence day (everything could be closed tomorrow). we got out of the apartment about 11:30 and decided to walk to gorky park (we're always on the lookout for a park where the kids can run on grass and swing on swings). it was a long and interesting walk, and an unexpectedly hot and sunny day.

our trip to the kremlin and the armory didn't work out because well, we got out of the house too late. but after lunch we re-grouped and made our way to the zoo.

today monica and ivan had interviews in the morning and late afternoon. in the morning we met with two alums of harvard's kennedy school. in the afternoon it was shamil beno, the former chechen foreign minister under dudayev.

embassy day


monica and ivan had their first interview appointments at the US embassy today. russia, it seems, may not be going down the toilet, but it's certainly circling the bowl.
