tying the knot on august 18th,
2007.
our first engagement session of 2007 was a blast! eric and shannon came down to see us from san francisco for some wedding planning and their engagement session in our little neck of the woods. we took them down the road to carlsbad beach for some fun in the sun. we chose a staircase to shoot at and made a goal to shoot everything within 50 square yards of that spot...we always love a good challenge :)
a little side note to all of our wedding couples for next year out there....NOW is the time to schedule your engagement session! it's slow, the weather is nice, and we're feeling creative! drop us a line so we can get your session on the books....

george + hannah
gettin hitched february 10th
2007.
ok, could george and hannah be any cuter?!!? these two are so fun together they were laughing the whole shoot! i decided to continue with my own personal challenge of "good shoots in weird places" that started with courtney and aaron's session at the arco. this location was even harder to pull anything out of than the last one. a big thanks to george and hannah for playing along with all my crazy ideas and for not asking for a full refund when we pulled up to see this....every girl's dream for where engagement photos would be taken...
after an hour and a half of fun and lots of me scratching my head...here's what we ended up with...

courtney + aaron
getting hitched july 6th
2007.
well it's finally here...i've been looking forward to courtney and aaron's engagement session since we met courtney a few months ago. we were immediately enamored with courtney's bubbly personality and were looking forward to meeting her fiance aaron. well aaron is just as cool and a total crackup to be around! can't wait for july guys...have lots of fun back in texas!!!
on a side note...
i really want to start challenging myself more so i ended up shooting this engagement session in the middle of the day, in the middle of nothing. for all you non-photographer people out there, technically the middle of the day is one of the worst times you can choose to shoot because the light is really harsh, has no real direction to it, it's unflattering for skin tones, etc. so that sounded like a good time to start the challenge :) just for fun i added on top of that a totally random spot to shoot which was an arco gas station in oceanside. we stopped there, shot in the raggety old field across the street and then played around in the street a bit. here's a few i came up with...

sheryl + jon
gettin hitched april 21st,
2007.
sheryl was a bridesmaid at one of our favorite weddings of 2005 (the hui wedding) and jon was actually roped into being our "family picture coordinator" at that same wedding. we were so excited to hear that they were tying the knot this year! sheryl and jon literally bubble over with joy when they are together! we laughed so hard the entire session that all of our cheeks were sore by the end :) can't wait til april guys!!!
luckily sheryl wasn't looking at me in this one :)

we've been looking forward to michael and nellie's engagement session since they booked us earlier this year...and man oh man they didn't disappoint! as usual, we shot around the three square blocks of our studio in downtown oceanside....but throw in a cool tie, a beautiful dress, a hot couple, and a willingness for anything...and wallah!
this one gets the official nate and jaclyn "OH SNAP!" award....thanks guys for a great time!

michele + ronny
engaged to be married july 21st
2007.
after our crazy double header labor day weekend (blog posts coming soon) we rushed back from LA on monday morning to finally meet michele and ronny and shoot their engagement session. they are ANOTHER couple from the bay area!!! they were both so much fun to shoot and were so into the pictures! we walked around our studio area in downtown again...it's always so much fun to challenge myself to continue to see different things and shoot in different locations :)
an extra special thank you to merilee from everafter events for referring michele and ronny to us....we can't wait for their wedding! they've already put together an all star list of vendors with merilee coordinating, annette gomez on flowers and decor, and us there to capture it all :)

karen + erik
engaged to be married october 22nd
2006.
well i must say, this session truly moved me....i've just got to tell this story because for me it emotionally charged these images even more. the condensed version is that just over a year ago, karen and erik were walking across a street when they were hit by a car. they both suffered pretty terrible physical damage but erik who was thrown 40 feet suffered a serious head injury. his head injury resulted in a month long coma, during which karen was by his side every day. once he awoke he was almost paralyzed on his left side, had lost about two years worth of memory, had the lower half of his leg basically replaced, etc. it was during this point in their relationship that karen and erik decided to get married. erik has made an amazing recovery and is still full of life and laughter. they said that their wedding to be held in october will not only be the day they say their vows but will be a HUGE thank you to all of their wonderful family and friends that played such a huge role in helping them through such a terrible experience.
thanks guys for choosing us to be a part of something SO special, it truly is an honor.
so on to the pics...we spent the afternoon walking around old town orange shooting. erik rocked his hat that i just LOVED! :)
this image is really moving to me...right after i took it, erik said that it is truly a miracle that he can even lift his arm this way....that even a few months ago it wouldn't have been possible. way to go erik!

it's always good to start an engagement session with a drink to loosen things up a bit :)
we met monet and tyler at the princess pub in little italy for their engagement session. afterwards we headed over by the new ballpark for a few shots in a parking garage we wanted to check out....ya i know...another parking garage! it's kinda our bag baby!
how cool is this shot!!!

getting hitched august 12th,

another fun one! craig was so funny...he and danielle have been following our blog and loving all the creative shots we come up with....he said he was actually worried that we would run out of ideas soon! not yet guys! so we really felt the pressure to come up with something witty for them....i think we delivered a very "bueno" shot that exceeded our expectations :) the best part is...it was the last shot of the shoot...and it was taken on the dumpster outside our studio!
i've got to hand it to craig...it's the first time we've seen someone hang upside down in a parking garage :)
and one fun one of all of us in downtown :)

despite jeremy breaking his foot the day before their engagement session he was still able to pull off his "blue steel" look on command :) we shot up in costa mesa by south coast plaza at a cool little park i was tipped off about...it's such a simple, sparse place that it really makes you work to get a shot...i love a good challenge.

so this has got to be one of my favorite sessions! mike and lynn were so great to work with and they were up for everything :) we spent the early morning shooting around the new parking garage by our studio having lots of laughs and making some really awesome images.

we had such a blast with jessica and greg! we shot their engagement session at pannikin coffee shop in encinitas and then headed down to the beach...well, actually we were under the hwy 101 overpass. jessica and greg kept each other and us laughing the whole time and we can't wait to shoot their wedding in august!

juliana + george
engaged to be married october 7th,
2006.
for juliana and george's engagement session we headed out to a really cool house in cardiff that had lots of little nooks and crannies for us to put them :) there were an amazing amount of bugs outside that day but george and juliana were troopers and climbed over ant hills and through spider webs to get some great shots. we're looking forward to their wedding at a vineyard in october!

tying the knot june 17th,

so we keep this thing around called "the big bad idea pad." anytime we see something that sparks an idea for a photo we jot it down on this virtual idea journal. jessie and anthony were on their way down from LA for their engagement session and at the last minute we looked over the "big bad idea pad" and were inspired for this idea for incorporating balloons with an engagement session. immediately jaclyn jumped up from the album she was working on and sped over the the 99 cent store to pick up a few bags of balloons...this is all with 15 minutes until jessie and anthony were supposed to arrive for their session. so once they arrived i pitched the idea, then quickly put everyone to work blowing up balloons on our drive over to the business park where we would search for a location. 20 minutes later we had about 70 balloons ready to go in trash bags! below is the resulting picture of all the hard work...thanks guys! :)

one of the best parts of our job is hanging out with fun people while we take their pictures...jeremy and michelle are so cute! their whole entire session they were telling jokes and making each other (and us!) laugh. we were extra nervous to shoot their session because jeremy is the director of photography for pixar studios so we wanted to create something extra cool for them. to start we set off to an old, abandoned drive-in theater which was interesting because it was the same drive-in that we used to go to back when we were dating! then we got kicked out by the grounds keeper...boo hoo. after that we headed off to oceanside city hall and had some more fun running around our favorite parking garage :) we're super excited to shoot jeremy and michelle's wedding next month...first off because they are just a down right awesome couple and secondly because their doing all of their wedding prep and pictures at the standard, an ultra modern hotel in downtown la. can't wait!!!

so...the session started out just fine and dandy at the del mar race track. as the session began to wind down, we made a comment about how we've never shot in front of a fountain..call us "anti-fountain" photographers or whatever. but we would shoot it if someone was actually IN the fountain. to our great pleasure, greg and cynthia hopped right in. they were such good sports about the whole thing and we got some awesome shots of them in the water. i guess you can say we've gotten over our "anti-fountainism". thanks guys!

take notes guys...
on saturday we had the opportunity to be a
part of something amazing. a couple months ago we were contacted by kiko about
shooting an engagement session...sounds normal right....well this was for the
ACTUAL engagement proposal. that's right, down on one knee, the big rock, and
of course....the question!
kiko rented out their favorite little restaurant in downtown LA for the evening, then invited all of his and susan's friends and family from all over the country to be there for the big moment. that wasn't even close to the end of it, he went the whole nine yards with customized napkins, personal place settings and menus, florals...the works!
so there we all were waiting for the big moment, jac hiding away inside the restaurant, me hiding behind my car like a sniper. then kiko and susan showed up, susan with no idea anything was about happen, she thought they were going to dinner and dancing! before they went into the restaurant, kiko turned susan around and said some very romantic stuff (which none of us could hear but i'm guessing it was pretty good based on her expressions), then it was down on one knee for the big question, she said yes, they embraced, and then for the other big surprise kiko turned susan around to see all of her closest friends and family looking on.
wow.
needless to say, kiko is a pretty amazing guy...but darn him, he's just set the bar pretty high...thank God i'm already married i'd hate to compete against that :)

yahoo! they built a brand new parking garage
2 blocks from our studio!!! lauren and bryan were the perfect couple to play in
our new playground :) they were both so wonderful to photograph...and oh so
stylin in their formal attire! can't wait for your bride and groom pre-wedding
session in a few weeks guys!
on a side note: we really tried to shoot differently for this session. usually when we shoot we are looking for only "perfect" light, which in our book means bright open shade. up until this past week we would do everything in our power to steer clear of shooting in the sun. well for this session we were actually looking for ALL light, not just our perfect light. it really challenged us to see differently, which is always a good thing.
