Installation guide - production release | |||||||||||||||
Since many years oracle decided to bring a new server release to the apple macintosh platform. Now that it's running unix - macos 10 - it's easier to port to it than ever. As full time oracle dba I can say it's as easy to install on a mac as it is on Solaris. All the things we do on Solaris we can do in macosX. As with other systems where oracle is running, you need to know oracle and quite a bit of the platform you install on to do it good. A few years of dba experience won't hurt. Why bother installing on macosX when we can do that on linux ? Well, just do it on both and see what's easier. My personal experiences with linux installations are not 100% positive. Compared to Solaris linux has quite a disadvantage regarding compatibillity issues. For oracle 8i you need compiler version X with libraries X.y For 9i the collection is different and for 10g again you need an other setup. I can install oracle 9i on Solaris 6,7,8,9 and I assume also on 10 with no problems at all. Just make sure the patch levels are up to date and it just works. It will take a while before that is going to happen on linux and here is where I hope Apple will do it's job and offer comparable compatibillities and stabillity. Installing 9i is the easiest ever since it is just a case of unpacking the archive and it's all there. Setup an oracle profile, /etc/oratab and it just works. Well, nearly but remember, it's only a developers release, not intended for production purposes. 9i also does not work on a G5. I will fill in the oddities later. For 10g oracle has included the normal universal installer. Make sure you have macos 10.3.6 and Xcode 1.2 or later installed. (what did I say about linux ;-)) The installer does look just like the ones on the other unix versions, with a slight difference: no X11 support but native graphics. So if you need to do remote installations you have to fallback to using vnc. As soon as time is there I will go into more detail. In the meantime check the apple forum on oracle's technet. Do you need help ? send me a message Ronald |
