Recent TV News Updates - 10/09/06

The '06-'07 TV Shows Status Page has been updated.

This update reflects CBS putting its new heist drama, Smith, on hiatus (read: unofficially cancelled), and NBC reportedly keeping its episode order for Kidnapped to 13 episodes (read: all but officially cancelled). In addition, ABC Family has officially pulled the plug on its new (and ill-conceived) new drama Three Moons Over Milford.

The update also reflects the renewals of Sci-Fi Channel's Eureka & Who Wants to Be a Superhero, and AMC's Hustle.

Recent TV News Updates - 09/25/06

The '06-'07 TV Shows Status Page has recently been updated.

The update reflects the cancellation of HBO's new first year multi-camera sitcom, Lucky Louie.

It also reflects the renewals of USA's Psych & The Dead Zone (Yay!!), Showtime's Brotherhood, and HBO's Entourage & The Wire.

Recent TV News Updates - 08/31/06

I know I've been bad about keeping up with this this summer, but...

Check out the '06-'07 TV Shows Status Page for updates on the cancellation of Stargate: SG-1 (by Sci-Fi channel, at least) and Beautiful People (by ABC Family), and the renewals of ABC Family's Kyle XY, Sci-Fi's Stargate: Atlantis, HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm(!), and USA's The 4400 (though, in the latter case, with the drop in quality the show has suffered this summer, I'm not sure why they bothered...).

DEADWOOD Reprieve; THE SHIELD Renewed; WINDFALL Ratings

Three interesting recent TV news items:

1) "Deadwood" Gets Cancelled, and Then a Reprieve (of sorts...)

You've probably heard the story - HBO inexplicably refused to order a fourth season of "Deadwood", leaving showrunner David Milch without a way to wrap up the series.

Well, now apparently, people have come to their senses at HBO, and a pair of two 2-hour movies have been ordered to allow Milch & co. a way to give "Deadwood" a proper wrap-up.

I guess everyone is happy now. :)

2) FX Renews "The Shield" for Seventh (and Final) Season

The Futon Critic also reports in the "Deadwood" article that FX has opted to renew "The Shield" for one, final 13-episode seventh season. It goes without saying that Michael Chiklis will return, but it appears that Forest Whitaker will be making a return appearance as well.

In addition, FX has also picked up a new drama set at a (newspaper) tabloid called "Dirt", for 13 episodes. "Dirt" is executive produced by Courteney Cox and husband David Arquette, and stars Cox (as the tabloid's editor), along with Ian Hart, Jeffrey Nordling, Josh Stewart, Kathleen Chalfant, Laura Allen, Shannyn Sossamon and Will McCormack.

3) NBC's "Windfall" - Ratings

For Summer, NBC is doing passably well with its original summer drama, "Windfall" - week #1 pulled in a pretty respectable 9.04 million viewers, while week #2 saw that number fall to about 7.75 million viewers (a roughly 20% decline, though the silly 'demo' numbers apparently held pretty steady with week #1).

Still, even the latter number would be OK for a summer series.

However, if "Windfall" continues to fall below even the 7.75 million viewer level, all bets are off, and it wouldn't surprise me if NBC pulled the show from the air early.

Stay tuned...

Fall 2006: NBC Revises

As has been widely reported by now, NBC did in fact 'blink' against (particularly) ABC's announced Fall 2006 schedule, and has revised its Fall 2006 line-up.

The Futon Critic has the new schedule here.

The highlights:

  • NBC's "premiere" new 1-hour show, Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip has been moved from Thursdays at 9pm (where it likely would have been creamed running against CBS's CSI, Grey's Anatomy (newly moved here by ABC), FOX's The O.C. and The CW's Supernatural) to a new timeslot on Mondays at 10pm (opposite CSI: Miami).
  • Moved into Thursdays at 9pm? NBC's newest 'utility player' Deal or No Deal. (My Name Is Earl & The Office get moved up one hour to 8pm.)
  • What happens to Medium (the previous Monday at 10pm occupant)? It gets kicked back to mid-season 2007.
  • As a result, Crossing Jordan will now not be held to mid-season - instead, it will go Fridays at 8pm (where Deal or No Deal was originally scheduled).
  • Speaking of Fridays, (the original) Law & Order will now go to Fridays at 10pm.
  • L&O: Criminal Intent, which was originally scheduled to move to Fridays at 10pm now goes Tuesdays at 9pm, leading in to L&O:SVU.
  • Why? To move another of NBC's new dramas, Kidnapped, out of the way of FOX's House and CBS's The Unit - Kidnapped now goes to Wednesdays at 10pm.
  • To further buttress its Wednesday lineup, NBC has also flipped its two new sitcoms, 20 Good Years and 30 Rock, to 8pm (a smart move, as there are currently no sitcoms planned at that time on the other networks), while moving The Biggest Loser [4] bask to 9pm.
  • New dramas, Heroes and Friday Night Lights, stay where they were originally scheduled - Mondays at 9pm, and Tuesdays at 8pm, respectively.

My "quick" analysis - this is a stronger schedule than the one NBC originally announced back on May 15. The only problems I see are on the L&O end - sending L&O:TOS series to Fridays is a death sentence (and that's maybe not surprising, all things considered), and putting L&O:CI & L&O:SVU back-to-back is risky, and could backfire.

But, at the least, this does save Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip from certain doom, without hurting Heroes in the process (rumors of an earlier incarnation of NBC's 'revised' schedule had Studio 60... displacing the latter show).

Guess we'll find out how well this worked in September...

(Note: My four Fall 2006 schedule grid sites - EpGuides.com, The Futon Critic, TV Picks, and TV Guide - all have the revised NBC Fall 2006 schedule, as does NBC's 'First Look' page.)

Upfronts 2006: "The CW" (aka. CWN)

And last, but not least, The All New! NEW!!! CW network has announced their official Fall 2006 schedule, along with the shows they cancelled (from The WB & UPN).
(Note: All of this info is available at the '05-'06 TV Shows Status Page, under Cancellations and Renewals - note that the Renewals section will be moved to a '05-'06 TV Shows Status Page in the near future...)

The CW now has a website - www.cwtv.com - and the Fall schedule is right there on the page.

On the Lot - Reality: (set for "Spring 2007"; timeslot: TBA) Reality Show from Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett - Aspiring director/filmmakers from across the country will vie for the opportunity of a lifetime.

I'll "review" all the networks' schedules in my Proposed Schedule for the Fall 2006 season later.

In FOX's case, it looks like they've mostly opted for stability for the second year in a row- most of their returning shows are staying put in their present timeslots. But things look to get dicey in January of 2007, if they stick to their currently announced Mid-Season schedule - luckily, I expect a couple of the new dramas to fail, which will renders FOX's Jan. 2007 schedule moot. Luckily for them...

Next up for FOX: The return of 24 and American Idol in January 2007

I'll "review" all the networks' schedules in my Proposed Schedule for the Fall 2006 season later on this year.

The early feeling? CBS has, by far, the best Fall 2006 schedule. Of course, in their case, it was easier, as most of their schedule already worked. But CBS has made some shrewd moves, such as moving Without a Trace to Sundays at 10pm (where it should squash ABC's new Brothers & Sisters like a bug!), and moving the potentially shaky new show Jericho to Wednesdays at 8pm where it will have no real competition. Smart stuff...

Summer Update: The WB

In what strikes me as a very, very surprising move, The soon-to-be-defunct WB netlet is opting 'burn off' some original programming this summer.

As I didn't expect either The WB or UPN to run anything original this summer (outside of WWE Smackdown!), I'm somewhat shocked by this move. (The heavy prominence of former WBN affiliates among the coming roster of The CW's new affiliates may partially explain this move...)

In any case, The WB has announced that it will be running new episodes of dramedy Pepper Dennis through July, and will also (finally!) show the 9 unaired episodes of sketch comedy Blue Collar TV (4 episodes aired last Fall).

Here's the summer scheduling of both shows:

Tuesdays (continuing):
8:00 pm Gilmore Girls reruns
9:00 pm Pepper Dennis (new episodes thru July 4!)

Wednesdays (as of May 31):
8:00 pm Blue Collar TV (new episodes as of May 31!)
8:30 pm Blue Collar TV (new episodes as of May 31!)
9:00 pm One Tree Hill reruns

The Summer 2006 TV Series page and the Summer 2006 Schedule Grid page have been appropriately updated.
(Update (05/14) - Summer pages updated to reflect recent summer schedule info releases from Comedy Central, FX, others.)

SUMMER 2006 Updates

All 3 of 'The Big Three' networks have updated their Summer 2006 scheduling plans.

Details can be found at the Summer 2006 TV Series page and the Summer 2006 Schedule Grid page.

The breakdowns:

ABC - So far, ABC has been vague about its Summer 2006 plans. There have been vague rumors about a reality show tentatively called Make It Happen. And, recently, ABC has apparently put 2 more shows into development for summer (according to The Futon Critic's 05/05 Development Update): a gameshow called The Con Test, and a reality show called Summer Share.

CBS - As it did last summer, CBS is sticking to all 'reality' for its original Summer 2006 programming. In addition to the return of both Big Brother 7 (All Stars) and Rock Star [2]: Supernova, CBS is adding a new reality offering called Tuesday Night Book Club, and a gameshow called (appropriately enough) Gameshow Marathon.

NBC - Meanwhile, NBC is adding more original scripted [gasp!] programming to Summer 2006, though this time its in the form of the burn-off of the previously unaired episodes of the sitcom Four Kings.

That means, so far, NBC is the only broadcast network with any original scripted programming scheduled for Summer 2006 - the new drama Windfall, and now burn-off of Four Kings. (NBC may also add burn-off of Joey and E-Ring to their schedule as well, though no announcements have been made. Also, FOX may add burn-off of the sitcom Stacked to the schedule too, though again no official word...)

ABC Renews BOSTON LEGAL, Yanks C-IN-C; REBA Cancelled?

The most recent pre-Upfront news:

Renewed! - ABC:
In a pre-Upfront move that's probably not too surprising, ABC is reported to have decided to renew the David E. Kelley series Boston Legal for a third season. At the same time...

Yanked from Schedule/Effective Cancellation - ABC:
...ABC has pulled its freshman drama Commander-in-Chief from the schedule, again.

While ABC claims the show will return to air in June to air its final 3 episodes, ABC said almost exactly the same thing about Eyes in spring of 2005, and Eyes was never seen from again.

IOW, this is it for C-in-C - it's toast.

Rumors of Cancellation - The CW (was: WBN):
And rumors continue to swirl that The CW will not pick up Reba, currently The WB's highest rated sitcom (by far).

In this case, the problem seems to be that Reba is produced by FOX studios, and CBS head honcho Les Moonves doesn't want to be doing FOX any favors right now.

Personally, if Reba does go away, I'll probably dance a jig. ;)

Lifetime Cancels MISSING

Meanwhile, Lifetime has made a decision about its second long-running drama (and I also have an update on its Summer 2006 programming - see my Summer 2006 TV Series page):

Cancellation - Lifetime:
And in the "inexplicable moves" department, cable channel Lifetime has opted to cancel its original drama Missing (nee: 1-800-Missing) after three seasons.

This is despite the fact that the show has continued to be a solid ratings performer for the channel, even improving in the ratings in its most recent third season.

And this is after Lifetime has already pulled the plug on its six-season original drama Strong Medicine.

The Futon Critic pointed out to me that Lifetime does have two scripted shows in the pipeline - 30-minute comedy Lovespring International (starts on Monday, 06/05 at 11pm) and 60-minute drama Angela's Eyes (starts sometime in July).

But, still - wouldn't it make much more sense to pair, say, "Angela's Eyes" with a returning drama like "Missing" as a lead-in?!

Oy vey...

NBC Renews Three More Dramas

NBC continues to lock in shows, 'pre-Upfront':

Renewed! - NBC:
Semi-desperate NBC has followed up the L&O renewal trifecta with a second hat-trick of renewals - this time, NBC has announced that it is renewing Crossing Jordan, Las Vegas and Medium.

Objectively, the ratings for all three shows are middling - they'd be decent ratings performers for FOX, but the ratings these shows manage would likely get them the hook on CBS.

So, these early renewals another indication of NBC's relatively weak position in the broadcast network landscape.
