Having split off the "WWW sites for British TV" into a separate Part of the FAQ, I am also posting this document to *rec.arts.tv.uk.misc* and *uk.media.tv.misc*, in hopes of feedback. If someone in either of the U.K. TV newsgroups is interested in taking over this document as a separate FAQ for these groups, or if such a FAQ already exists, please let me know. Otherwise, please let me know if there any mistakes or omissions. Thank you. :) -- IV. REC.ARTS.TV FAQ: WWW SITES FOR TV SHOWS ASSOCIATED WITH REC.ARTS.TV PART C: WWW SITES FOR BRITISH & CANADIAN TV SHOWS by Ian J. Ball This version: 3.10 Last updated: July 1, 1998 THE REC.ARTS.TV FAQ: I. THE REC.ARTS.TV FAQ: General FAQL Frequently Asked Questions List for the usenet group rec.arts.tv: made up of a list of answers for some of the most commonly asked questions for rec.arts.tv (imagine that!). Included are the defintion of some terms, a list of TV show abbreviations used in rec.arts.tv (and other TV groups), and a list of TV network addresses & phone numbers for rec.arts.tv. II. THE REC.ARTS.TV FAQ: Usenet & Mail FAQ Frequently Asked Questions about all the usenet newsgroups and internet mailing lists for TV. Included are a list of all usenet newsgroups associated with TV and TV shows, and a list of TV-related and TV show mailing lists. III. THE REC.ARTS.TV FAQ: WWW Pages for Shows (**this document**) Frequently Asked Questions about WWW (Web) pages for TV, and the TV shows associated with rec.arts.tv. Included are a list of known WWW sites arranged alphabetically by TV show. This FAQ is in three sections: - Part A is devoted to the main TV Web sites and WWW sites for all current "first-run" U.S. TV shows. - Part B is devoted to WWW sites for all "classic" U.S. TV shows (i.e. those that are no longer "first-run"). - Part C is a short document devoted exclusively to WWW sites for British and Canadian TV shows. Copyright, Ian J. Ball, 1995, 1998. DISCLAIMER: I will attempt to keep this FAQ as updated as possible. But an absence of any item from this list does not necessarily mean that the item doesn't exist. And I can't promise that I will be able to include everything in this FAQ (as of now, I am sticking to TV shows from English speaking countries, especially the U.S.). Further, certain items may contain typos, so be careful when entering items from this list. Any errors should be forwarded to the author. 0.1) What is a FAQ? What is an Episode Guide? Etc. See Part IIIA, Section 0.4 for more details. 0.2) Acknowledgments See Part IIIA, Section 0.4 for more details. 0.3) Where the Author Can Be Reached This FAQ is an evolving document, and it is probably either incorrect in parts or is missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact the author, Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (prefered address for private E-mail) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.4) Where Can I Get a Copy of This FAQ? FTP: As of now, this FAQ is available from two FTP sites: The first one is my own personal folder available in one of AOL's own FTP sites; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found here. (NOTE: Enter the menus as shown when trying to reach this site, as AOL does *not* allow a "dir" listing of the root directory of that site, as it would contain up to 2.5 million different folders!) (ALSO NOTE: My other FAQ's and episode guides are available from this same FTP site.) It can be found at either of the following addresses: ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ *or* ftp://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ See Part IIIA, Section 0.4 for more details. WWW (the Web): Presently there are two Web sites which contains this FAQ (that I know of). (If anyone else wants to make it available at their site, please let me know!) At present, the Web site for this FAQ (in HTML format) will be found through my home page. It is presently under construction, but most of it can be found at: http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/FAQ-Intro.html *or* http://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/FAQ-Intro.html The second site is the "Avimall" Archive for TV episode guides and FAQ's. The version of the FAQ found here in text format (i.e. PREformated or non-HMTL format). It can be reached through: http://AVIMALL.COM/entertain/index.html 0.5) The Main Internet TV Group: rec.arts.tv See Part IIIA, Section 0.5 for more details. 0.6) How Often Will This FAQ Be Posted? All parts of this FAQ will be posted once a month to rec.arts.tv (and perhaps to news.answers, etc.), either on the first of the month or around the first Monday of the month (holidays excepted). If it is necessary, Part 1 of this FAQ will be posted more often (likely, bimonthly). However this FAQ can also be obtained via FTP and the Web (see Section 0.4 above), and information in this (e.g. part of the introduction to this FAQ) may also be posted more often (perhaps bimonthly or weekly). 0.7) What Is the World Wide Web (WWW)? How Do I Access It? WWW stands for the World Wide Web (or, just "the Web" for short). With a Webreader, all one needs are the address for various Web sites to access them. And of course, this FAQ list the links to all (or almost all, at least) of the TV Web sites. See Part IIIA, Section 0.7 for more details. 0.8) What is in each sub-Part of this Part of the FAQ? As this FAQ was developed, it soon became apparent that the WWW (and FTP) Parts of the rec.arts.tv FAQ were becoming too large to post as single documents. In addition, these Parts were too cumbersome to convert in their entirety into HTML versions: the user would end up with very large documents to download, which can be a problem when the connection is slow. Indeed, this is one of the principal problems with some of the other main TV WWW sites (see Section 1.1 of Part III.A of this FAQ). I decided that the most logical answer would be to split Part 3 of this FAQ into three sub-Parts based on content. So Parts 3 of this FAQ are actually made up of 3 sub-Parts: - Part A, which is devoted to the main TV (WWW) sites, and to the Internet sites for all current "first-run" U.S. TV shows. - Part B, which is devoted to Internet sites for "classic" U.S. TV shows (i.e. those shows that are no longer "first-run"). - Part C is a short document devoted exclusively to British and Canadian TV shows. This seemed to be a logical division, as most of the posts to rec.arts.tv usually involved people either interested in sites for old shows *or* (usually more newbie-like) people interested in sites for currently first-run shows; the British & Canadian TV Part is added for completeness. So, keep this division in mind when browsing through Parts 3 or 4 of this FAQ. 0.9) CHANGED/ADDED: Since last version The following things have been changed or added since the last version of this FAQ: - Many network listings were edited/corrected. - changes to Section 4.1.1: the "BRITISH COMEDY" Section include: - ADDED: - none - MODIFED: - none - REMOVED: - none - changes to Section 4.1.2: the "BRITISH DRAMA" Section include: - ADDED: - none - MODIFED: - The Bill - REMOVED: - none - changes to Section 4.1.3: the "BRITISH SCI-FI" Section include: - ADDED: - none - MODIFED: - none - REMOVED: - none - the folowing changes were made to Section 4.1.4: the "MISCELLANEOUS BRITISH SHOWS" section: - none - changes to Section 4.2: the "TV Shows from Canada" Section include: - ADDED: - none - MODIFED: - none - REMOVED: - none 4.0) WWW SITES FOR BRITISH & CANADIAN TV SHOWS There is a semi-formal format to the following list. URL (HTTP) links are listed in the following order: - OFFICIAL links first: These are generally sites provided by the TV show's production company, or the show's network, or on occation from the show's creators/producers. These type of sites are increasingly common, and more shows have these so-called "official" sites now. However, "classic" shows do not tend to have sites from their Production companies; cable networks that rerun these shows may have pages devoted to some of the shows. - UNOFFICIAL links second: These are generally sites provided by the most dedicated fan(s) of a show. These sites have substantial information on the show, such as a FAQ, an episode guide, future episode titles and airing order, etc. (e.g. Babylon 5's "Lurker" site, Vidiot's "Star Trek(s)" site, etc.). Often, many of these "unofficial" sites have superior information than the so-called "official" sites. Many, but not all, (current) shows have these so-called unofficial sites; many classic shows seem to be getting good unofficial sites these days, as well. - FAN links next: These are generally sites provided by other fans of a show. They may contain information about the show, such as information about the cast, but they aren't necessarily as information-packed as some of the so-called unoffical sites (i.e. they may not have FAQ-type information, or may only have an episode list, instead of an episode guide). Still, such sites are often still useful. - GENERAL SITE links last: These are sites where many guides are archived. As of now only the "AviMall" TV guide archive site (http://avimall.com/entertain/index.html), and perhaps Tardis (http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~dave/) qualify in this category. Remember though that only guides at AviMall tend to be up-to-date; guides at Tardis tend to be several years old. This Part of the FAQ is into sections, as follows: - 4.1.1) BRITISH COMEDY: This section contains shows that are comedies, i.e. situation-comedies. Most half-hour shows will be found here. - 4.1.2) BRITISH DRAMA: This section contains shows that are dramas, or shows that are more drama-oriented than comedy- oriented. Most 1 hour shows will tend to be found here. This section would also include soap-operas; but not sci-fi. - 4.1.3) BRITISH SCIENCE-FICTION: This section contains shows that are science-fiction based. Most science-fiction shows are 1 hour. This section will also include fantasy-based shows. Comedic Sci-Fi shows will also be found here. - 4.1.4) BRITISH MISCELLANEOUS SHOWS: This section will contain any shows that are left out of the above categories. Animated shows and cartoons, children's shows, musical and variety shows, game shows, documentaries (e.g the Real World), news shows, and talk shows will be found here. - 4.2) SHOWS FROM CANADA: This section will contain any shows that originated from the Canada So here is the list of all the TV show links known to this author). 4.1) WWW Sites for TV Shows from the U.K. 4.1.1) Sites for British COMEDIES Show Net. ---- ---- 2 point 4 Children BBC1 http://pages.prodigy.com/PA/mrbrittas/2point4a.html http://www.xnet.com/~djk/uk_comedy.shtml Absolutely Fabulous BBC2/1(COM) http://www.ridge.net/abfab/ http://online.anu.edu.au/nceph/Tor/ http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~dave/guides/index.html Agony ITV[LWT] http://www.xnet.com/~djk/uk_comedy.shtml 'Allo 'Allo BBC1 http://www.coldcut.com/video/aa/ Are You Being Served?
