Copyright, Ian J. Ball, 1995, 1998. DISCLAIMER: I will attempt to keep this FAQ as updated as possible. But an absence of any item from this list does not necessarily mean that the item doesn't exist. And I can't promise that I will be able to include everything in this FAQ (as of now, I am sticking to TV shows from English speaking countries, especially the U.S.). Further, certain items may contain typos, so be careful when entering items from this list. Any errors should be forwarded to the author. 0.1) What is a FAQ? What is an Episode Guide? Etc. FAQ's & FAQL's: A FAQ (short for "Frequently Asked Questions") or a FAQL (short for "Frequently Asked Questions List") is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the Internet to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards), or to an online service bulletin board or BBS, to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. For instance, a FAQ about a TV show will attempt to answer questions about that TV show, and will be posted to some relevant usenet groups (and BB's on the on-line services) in hopes of answering the common questions asked the TV show(s). Hopefully, a FAQ (like this one) will mean that people will not have to post a message to get an answer to their question: they can just wait for the FAQ to be posted. Episode Guides & Summaries: An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. Episode guides provide a short synopsis of the plot of each episode, and sometimes other information, including episode titles, the credits for that episode, original airdates and/or prodcution code numbers. They are sometimes posted to the relevant newsgroup(s), or they are found via FTP or the Web. Episode summaries are *much* more detailed plot synopses, but usually of only one particular episode. In other words, while an episode guide is a long list of short plot synopses for all the episodes of a show or a season, an episode summary is a document that deals only one episode in detail. Shows with a very dedicated fandom (e.g. Star Trek, Babylon 5, ER, etc.) tend to have episode summaries more than they have episode guides. Episode Lists: Episode lists provide only a list of the number of episodes aired and the episode titles for a show, but *without* episode plot descriptions. Others go further and will list original first-run airdates and/or production codes. If it doesn't contain plot synopses, it's an episode list (*not* an episode guide). 0.2) Acknowledgments A special acknowledgement goes to Dave Chapman (dave@cheers.demon.co.uk; this E-mail address may no longer be correct), former maintainer of the Tardis (TV) FTP site located at: ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/media/tv/collection/tardis/ who tirlessly collected all the available TV FAQ's and episode guides when he was the maintainer of Tardis, and without whose efforts this FAQ would probably not be possible. And special thanks to Bob Hirsch (FTPAdmin@aol.com) and the FTP team on AOL who have made the "Members" AOL FTP site available to users for WWW and FTP sites, so that this FAQ (and my other FAQ's and episode guides) can have a permanent home for updates: ftp://members.aol.com/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/; see the "README" or the "README.html" file for more information). I'd also like to thank the people who have helped me along the way, both with this FAQ, and with other questions, including: - Pete Brennan (pete@tech.grumman.com) - Cliff Chen (fidodido@pacificnet.net) - Tony Cianfaglione (i-ema@chebucto.ns.ca) - Brad Dancer (bdancer@mindspring.com) - Loren Heisey (lorenr@peak.org) - Joshua Kreitzer (j-kreitzer@nwu.edu) - Karla Robinson (karla@pop.uky.edu) - Rick Shae (rickshae@ix.netcom.com) - Nick Tang (aq010@FreeNet.Carleton.CA) - David Tamkin (dattier@miso.wwa.com) - Tom Walsh (avs@netport.com) - "Vidiot" (brown@vidiot.com) and all the others (many of whom I'm probably unjustly leaving out). 0.3) Where the Author Can Be Reached This FAQ is an evolving document, and it is probably either incorrect in parts or is missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact the author, Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (prefered address for private E-mail) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.4) Where Can I Get a Copy of This FAQ? FTP: As of now, this FAQ is available from two FTP sites: The first one is my own personal folder available in one of AOL's own FTP sites; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found here. (NOTE: Enter the menus as shown when trying to reach this site, as AOL does *not* allow a "dir" listing of the root directory of that site, as it would contain up to 2.5 million different folders!) (ALSO NOTE: My other FAQ's and episode guides are available from this same FTP site.) It can be found at either of the following addresses: ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ *or* ftp://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ The second FTP site is the Tardis FTP site; all manner of TV FAQ's and episode guides are available from here. However, the version of the FAQ avilable here is several *months* OUT-OF-DATE (so use my FTP site at AOL if you can). Still, the address for Tardis is: ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/public/media/tv/collections/tardis/meta_info/ WWW (the Web): Presently there are two Web sites which contains this FAQ (that I know of). (If anyone else wants to make it available at their site, please let me know!) At present, the Web site for this FAQ (in HTML format) will be found through my home page. It is presently under construction, but most of it can be found at: http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/FAQ-Intro.html *or* http://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/FAQ-Intro.html The second site is the "Avimall" Archive for TV episode guides and FAQ's. The version of the FAQ found here in text format (i.e. PREformated or non-HMTL format). It can be reached through: http://AVIMALL.COM/entertain/index.html 0.5) The Main Internet TV Group: rec.arts.tv *rec.arts.tv* is the primary usenet newsgroup for discussion of all TV shows and related subjects. It's official newsgroup description is: "The boob tube, its history, and past and current shows." *rec.arts.tv* is widely distributed as part of the full "big 7" usenet newsfeed (e.g. comp., misc., news., rec., sci., soc., talk.). Unlike some other rec.* groups, *rec.arts.tv* is unmoderated. Any questions concerning a TV show, foreign or domestic, should probably directed here first. It is appropriate to discuss any TV show or movie; first-run or rerun; network, cable or syndicated show in *rec.arts.tv*. Besides *rec.arts.tv*, there are other more specialized TV groups, including the rec.arts.sf.tv.*, rec.arts.startrek.*, rec.arts.tv.soaps.*, rec.arts.tv.uk.* hierarchies, and the more limitedly distributed alt.tv.* hierarchy. But *rec.arts.tv* is the primary usenet group for general TV discussion (i.e. *do* start here first). 0.6) How Often Will This FAQ Be Posted? All parts of this FAQ will be posted once a month to rec.arts.tv (and perhaps to news.answers, etc.), either on the first of the month or around the first Monday of the month (holidays excepted). If it is necessary, Part 1 of this FAQ will be posted more often (likely, bimonthly). However this FAQ can also be obtained via FTP and the Web (see Section 0.4 above), and information in this (e.g. part of the introduction to this FAQ) may also be posted more often (perhaps bimonthly or weekly). 0.7) What Is the World Wide Web (WWW)? How Do I Access It? WWW stands for the World Wide Web (or, just "the Web" for short). It is the newest and fastest growing part of what is commonly known as "the Internet" or "the Information Superhighway", as it has existed only since the very late 1980's and has grown tremendously in the last 2 years. It is based on the HTML computer language, which stands for "HyperText Mark- up Language". HMTL is based on a simple premise: any text document can be converted into an HTML document by the addition of "tags". These tags are identified by the "<[tag]>" brackets for opening tags, and "[tag]>" brackets for closing tags (e.g.
is the opening tag for PREformated text,is the closing tag for PREformated text, etc.). These HTML documents can then be placed at a special server (e.g. an FTP server with an 80 port) that can accept commands from a Webreader. The second novel feature of the WWW/HTML is its ability to "link" from one document to the next through HTTP, short for "HyperText Transfer Protocol"; this is part of the feature that is known as "HyperText". Thus if one knows HTML, and one knows the address of a second Web page about a certain subject that is mentioned on the person's page, one can "highlight" that word or phrase, and have it "linked" to the second Web page. All a reader has to do is to click on or select the highlighted word or phrase and viola! the Web page on that subject will automatically be uploaded for the user to read. A Webreader, and an internet connection, is all an internet user needs to access the Web. The Webreader is what interprets the tags in an HTML document after the document has been uploaded from the WWW server, and then lays out the page according to those tags and the Webreader's own set-up. Many Webreaders also have the ability to access FTP and Gopher sites. The most popular Webreaders, by operating system, are listed below: News reader Operating sys. Description ----------- -------------- ----------- Netscape Windows, Now probably the most popular Macintosh GUI Webreader; relatively X-Windows fast; nice looking; from: ftp://ftp.netscape.com/ /netscape/ Explorer Windows, Now the second most popular Macintosh webreader, thanks to Microsoft's near monopoly on evrything PC; available from: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ Mosaic Windows, Previously the most popular Macintosh Web reader; nice looking; X-Windows but Beta versions have been unreliable; was once slow; from: ftp://ftp.ncsa.uicu.edu/ Lynx UNIX, VAX A text-driven Webreader that is simple to use; the lack of the ability to load images and sounds rather defeats the purpose of the Web however; available from: ftp://ftp2.cc.ukans.edu/ /pub/WWW/lynx/ MacWeb Macintosh A Mac Webreader that is very small and *very* fast; no frills, and now pretty obsolete; available from: ftp://ftp.einet.net/einet /mac/macweb/ WinWeb Windows A Windows Webreader made by the same people who make MacWeb above; from: ftp://ftp.einet.net/einet /pc/winweb/ NOTE: Most of the On-Line services (e.g. AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy) now seem to have thier own Webreaders (though they now are allowing Netscape or Explorer use) that work through the company's servers. All are acceptably fast, and have acceptable interfaces. Once one has a Webreader, all one needs are the address for various Web sites. Most of the popular Webreaders default to a home page with links to other sites. And of course, this FAQ list the links to all (or almost all, at least) of the TV Web sites. 0.8) What is in each sub-Part of this Part of the FAQ? As this FAQ was developed, it soon became apparent that the WWW (and FTP) Parts of the rec.arts.tv FAQ were becoming too large to post as single documents. In addition, these Parts were too cumbersome to convert in their entirety into HTML versions: the user would end up with very large documents to download, which can be a problem when the connection is slow. Indeed, this is one of the principal problems with some of the other main TV WWW sites (see Section 1.1 of Part III.A of this FAQ). I decided that the most logical answer would be to split Part 3 of this FAQ into three sub-Parts based on content. So Parts 3 of this FAQ are actually made up of 3 sub-Parts: - Part A, which is devoted to the main TV (WWW) sites, and to the Internet sites for all current "first-run" U.S. TV shows. - Part B, which is devoted to Internet sites for "classic" U.S. TV shows (i.e. those shows that are no longer "first-run"). - Part C is a short document devoted exclusively to British and Canadian TV shows. This seemed to be a logical division, as most of the posts to rec.arts.tv usually involved people either interested in sites for old shows *or* (usually more newbie-like) people interested in sites for currently first-run shows; the British & Canadian TV Part is added for completeness. 0.9) CHANGED/ADDED: Since last version The following things have been changed or added since the last version of this FAQ: - All links for Sections 1.1-1.4 were authenticated and updated. - The followingadditions or moifications were made to Section 1.1: The Main TV WWW Section (this section was also reordered): - AviMall (submissions are likely no longer accepted!) Mailto: djk@xnet.com, or fergus@xnet.com 2) http://avimall.com/entertain/index.html The "AviMall" Web site is an archive of many TV episode guides, in much the same way as "The Entertainment Media Archives" and "Tardis" used to archive episode guides. However, the maintainer of the AviMall archive has recently expressd an interest in moving on, so I doubt any new episode guide submissions will be accepted. The list of guides still available at AviMall can be found at: http://avimall.com/entertain/indexfull.txt As of now, there are more than 800 guides! NOTE: Only episode guides that are *unique* to AviMall will be listed in this FAQ; still, duplicate of guides for popular shows may also be found here. And only episode *guides* at AviMall are listed here; episode *lists* are excluded. See the AviMall site for more details. Mailto: avs@netport.com 3) http://www.ultimatetv.com/UTVL/utvl.html The "Ultimate TV List" for the Web, which includes most of the known links to many of TV show Web sites (a database maintained by users), and also a lot of TV information contained in this FAQ. It also contains the "TV Internet Resource Guide". A very useful resourse for tracking down TV show Internet resources. However, it can be cumbersome and used to be *slow*, though recent reorganiziations of the site have seemed to improve matters. It is definitely a "must see" TV web site. Mailto: utvl-maintainer@ultimatetv.com (or "submission" form) 4) http://www.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Television/ The "Yahoo" Web pointers: a somewhat complete list (now almost as complete as the "Ultimate TV List", and sometimes even more complete) of pointers to TV Web sites, including some not found other places. But Yahoo is somewhat difficult to submit links to. Mailto: n/a 5) http://www.imdb.com/ (Headquarters URL) The "Internet Movie (& TV) Database" (IMDb), which can be reached through the following three sites: 1) http://us.imdb.com/ (USA) 2) http://uk.imdb.com/ (UK) 3) http://italy.imdb.com/ (Italy) The IMDb is a searchable database (maintained by users) which users can use to obtain the cast of a TV show (or movie), or a list of other roles for actors and actresses (see, Part 1 of this FAQ, Section 1.3 for more information). Mailto: movie@imdb.com 6) http://www.afionline.org/CineMedia/cmframe.html The "CineMedia" TV site from the American Film Institute. Contains a large number of links to resources for TV shows and networks, as well as other information (e.g. movies, radio). Mailto: CineMedia@afionline.org 7) http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/tv/top.html A somewhat complete Web list of usenet FAQ's, including (in the case of this particular page) FAQs for TV shows. To get on this list, the FAQ's or guides must be submitted to news.answers. Mailto: news-answers-request@mit.edu 8) http://members.aol.com/soaplinks/index.html The "Soap Links" page: a very comprehensive listing of links to most of the currently airing TV drama/soap operas, especially daytime soap operas. Probably the site of sites for readers of the rec.arts.tv.soaps.* hierarchy. Mailto: soaplinks@port-charles.com 9) http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~dave/guides/index.html A Web interface to the Tardis FTP site, which contains several guides, including former site maintainer Dave Chapman's own guides, some of which can't be found elsewhere. But it is *not* being updated anymore, so its usefulness is limited to guides for older shows. Mailto: tv-archive@cheers.demon.co.uk (moribund) 1.2) WWW Sites with Multiple Episode Guides Here are the WWW sites that contain multiple episode guides (or episode lists), but are not full TV episode guide/FAQ archives like some of the sites in Section 1.1 above: http://coptv.miningco.com/ The "Cop TV" site, which is devoted to "cop" TV shows, such as "Homicide" and "NYPD Blue". http://members.aol.com/IJBall/WWW/TV.html, or http://users.aol.com/IJBall/WWW/TV.html A site containing several (of my) TV episode guides and FAQ's, including this rec.arts.tv FAQ. Mailto: IJBall@aol.com http://pages.prodigy.com/mr&mrs-smith/mysites.htm Jason Conrad's site for Nowhere Man, Quantum Leap and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Mailto: CWZY26B@prodigy.com http://people.delphi.com/slanoue/tvpage.htm Suzanne Lanoue's site containing many TV related links, and a number of episode guides, including several guides that cannot be found elsewhere. Mailto: slanoue@delphi.com http://primetimeguide.hypermart.net/ The "PrimeTime Guide" site from Robert Ewing, which contains the old "96-97 TV Episode Guides" page (originally by Tony Lammens), and now "contains guides for every current U.S. TV series". Mailto: rewing@dynamite.com.au http://www.canit.se/~dpa/guides/ A site for many episode lists (and some episode guides), mostly for US comedies and Swedish TV shows. Mailto: dpa@canit.se http://www.crl.com/~rad/ http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/9821/ Audrey DeLisle's Web site, which contains her several TV episode guides; a useful site, especially for guides for syndicated shows. Mailto: rad@crl.com http://www.fortunecity.com/lavendar/pulpfiction/99/ A Web site for Stephan Lerchegger's episode guides and German episode lists. Mailto: phyx@gmx.net http://www.goodnet.com/~leew/ Lee Whitesides' site for science-fiction and fantasy TV shows, and their TV airing schedules; includes show episode lists. Mailto: leew@goodnet.com http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~tokra/tv.htm Torsten Kracke's site for TV episode guides and lists, with the added benefit of being in Deutsch (that's German for the language deficient!). Mailto: tokra@brem.de http://www.jump.net/~snapp/tvguide/ A Web site with episode guides for several TV shows, including Magnum PI, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Max Headroom, and other classic and current shows. Mailto: snapp@jump.net http://www.lido.com/tv/ A Web site for Doug Kraus' guides, which mostly include MASH, Gilligan's Island, Saturday Night Live, the Gameshows List and info on Infomercials. Mailto: dijon@lido.com http://www.mjnewton.demon.co.uk/tv/ The "Newton's Laws of Television" site from Matthew J. Newton, which is dedicated to some British TV comedies. Mailto: matthew@mjnewton.demon.co.uk http://www.nyx.net/~dnadams/index.html A Web site for Dean Adams' guides, which mostly include FOX comedies, but also include comedies like "Frasier". Mailto: dadams@netcom.com http://www.peak.org/~lorenr/ Loren Heisey's web site, which contains guides for The Outer Limits (both versions), Young Indiana Jones, and links to other sites. Mailto: lorenr@peak.org http://www.sofcom.com/lammens/ Tony Lammens' site, which contains his several episode guides including the British cop drama The Bill, as well as several American dramas, such as Murder One, Millennium, etc. (NOTE: Tony's former '96-'97 Season episode guides page, which contained short episode guides for many of the first-run shows shown in Primetime on the U.S. broadcast networks can still be found at http://www.sofcom.com/lammens/episodes.htm.) Mailto: lammens@connexus.apana.org.au http://www.uran.net/sci_fi/goscifi.html The SciFi Site WWW Pages, a site which contains many guides to sci-fi shows of the past. http://www.vidiot.com/ A Web site for Vidiot's guides, including the "complete" Web on the Star Trek saga. Mailto: vidiot@vidiot.com 1.3) TV Schedules WWW Sites I've divided this section into two parts: "official" schedules sites (e.g. "TV Guide", etc.) that tend to provide TV schedule info on a daily basis, and "unofficial" sites (e.g. PrimeTime Review, My status page, etc.) which tend to list general schedule info (e.g. general schedule grids, renewal/cancelation information, etc.). 1.3.1) "Official" Schedule Sites: For this information, people may also want to check Mark Holtz's "TV Listings Page" which also lists TV schedules WWW sites: http://www.speedlink.com/mholtz/links/tvlisting.htm Here are the "official" sites that contain partial or complete TV schedule information, *every* day: http://my.excite.com/tv/ The web service "My Excite Channel"; it allows users to customize a web page full of information, including a customizable grid for TV schedules. http://www.clicktv.com/ ClickTV's web site which, among other things, allow users to get schedule grids or listings by channel. Mailto: smtv@smallworld.co.nz TVNZ http://www.tv.co.nz/ The Web area for the TV New Zealand, and its shows. 2.0) WWW SITES FOR "CURRENT" TV SHOWS There is a semi-formal format to the following lists. URL (HTTP) links are listed in the following order: - OFFICIAL links first: These are generally sites provided by the TV show's production company, or the show's network, or on occation from the show's creators/producers. These type of sites are increasingly common, and more shows have these so-called "offical" sites now. - UNOFFICIAL links second: These are generally sites provided by the most dedicated fan(s) of a show. These sites have substantial information on the show, such as a FAQ, an episode guide, future episode titles and airing order, etc. (e.g. Babylon 5's "Lurker" site, Vidiot's "Star Trek(s)" site, etc.). Often, many of these "unofficial" sites have superior information than the so-called "official" sites. Many, but not all, (current) shows have these so-called unofficial sites; many classic shows seem to be getting good unofficial sites these days, as well. - FAN links next: These are generally sites provided by other fans of a show. They may contain information about the show, such as information about the cast, but they aren't necessarily as information-packed as some of the so-called unoffical sites (i.e. they may not have FAQ-type information, or may only have an episode list, instead of an episode guide). Still, such sites are often still useful. - GENERAL SITE links last: These are sites where many guides are archived. As of now only the "AviMall" TV guide archive site (http://avimall.com/entertain/index.html), and perhaps Tardis (http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~dave/) qualify in this category. Remember though that only guides at AviMall tend to be up-to-date; guides at Tardis tend to be several years old. As there are many Web sites for (US) TV shows, I have attempted to divide this section into 5 parts by genre. Of course, a few people may feel that some shows have been miscategorized, but no system is perfect. The divisions are as follows: - 2.1) COMEDY: This section contains shows that are comedies, i.e. situation-comedies. Most half-hour shows will be found here. Animated comedies are found in the "Miscellanea" Part. - 2.2) DRAMA: This section contains shows that are dramas, or shows that are more drama-oriented than comedy-oriented. Most 1 hour shows will tend to be found here. This section would also include westerns and nightime soap- operas; but not shows that are mostly sci-fi or fantasy. - 2.3) SCIENCE-FICTION/FANTASY: This section contains shows that are science-fiction based. Most science-fiction shows are 1 hour. This section also includes fantasy-based shows; but not most half-hour comedies or any cartoons. - 2.4) DAYTIME SOAP OPERAS: This section contains the daytime soap operas only. That's pretty self-explanatory. - 2.5) MISCELLANEOUS & OTHER: This section will contain any shows that are left out of the above categories. Animated shows and cartoons, children's shows, musical and variety shows, game shows, documentaries (e.g the Real World), news shows, and talk shows will be found here. So here is the list of all the TV show links known to this author). 2.1) WWW Sites for "Current" US TV Shows: COMEDY Show Net. ---- ---- Caroline in the City NBC http://www.nbc.com/tvcentral/
