But an absence of any item from this list does not necessarily mean that the item doesn't exist. And I can't promise that I will be able to include everything in this FAQ (as of now, I am sticking to TV shows from English speaking countries, especially the U.S.). Further, certain items may contain typos, so be careful when entering items from this list. Any errors should be forwarded to the author. 0.1) What is a FAQ? What is an Episode Guide? Etc. FAQ's & FAQL's: A FAQ (short for "Frequently Asked Questions") or a FAQL (short for "Frequently Asked Questions List") is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the Internet to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards), or to an online service bulletin board or BBS, to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. For instance, a FAQ about a TV show will attempt to answer questions about that TV show, and will be posted to some relevant usenet groups (and BB's on the on-line services) in hopes of answering the common questions asked the TV show(s). Hopefully, a FAQ (like this one) will mean that people will not have to post a message to get an answer to their question: they can just wait for the FAQ to be posted. Episode Guides & Summaries: An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. Episode guides provide a short synopsis of the plot of each episode, and sometimes other information, including episode titles, the credits for that episode, original airdates and/or prodcution code numbers. They are sometimes posted to the relevant newsgroup(s), or they are found via FTP or the Web. Episode summaries are *much* more detailed plot synopses, but usually of only one particular episode. In other words, while an episode guide is a long list of short plot synopses for all the episodes of a show or a season, an episode summary is a document that deals only one episode in detail. Shows with a very dedicated fandom (e.g. Star Trek, Babylon 5, ER, etc.) tend to have episode summaries more than they have episode guides. Episode Lists: Episode lists provide only a list of the number of episodes aired and the episode titles for a show, but *without* episode plot descriptions. Others go further and will list original first-run airdates and/or production codes. If it doesn't contain plot synopses, it's an episode list (*not* an episode guide). 0.2) Acknowledgments A special acknowledgement goes to Dave Chapman (dave@cheers.demon.co.uk; this E-mail address may no longer be correct), former maintainer of the Tardis (TV) FTP site located at: ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/media/tv/collection/tardis/ who tirlessly collected all the available TV FAQ's and episode guides when he was the maintainer of Tardis, and without whose efforts this FAQ would probably not be possible. And special thanks to Bob Hirsch (FTPAdmin@aol.com) and the FTP team on AOL who have made the "Members" AOL FTP site available to users for WWW and FTP sites, so that this FAQ (and my other FAQ's and episode guides) can have a permanent home for updates: ftp://members.aol.com/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/; see the "README" or the "README.html" file for more information). I'd also like to thank the people who have helped me along the way, both with this FAQ, and with other questions, including: - Pete Brennan (pete@tech.grumman.com) - Cliff Chen (fidodido@pacificnet.net) - Tony Cianfaglione (i-ema@chebucto.ns.ca) - Brad Dancer (bdancer@mindspring.com) - Loren Heisey (lorenr@peak.org) - Joshua Kreitzer (j-kreitzer@nwu.edu) - Karla Robinson (karla@pop.uky.edu) - Rick Shae (rickshae@ix.netcom.com) - Nick Tang (aq010@FreeNet.Carleton.CA) - David Tamkin (dattier@miso.wwa.com) - Tom Walsh (avs@netport.com) - "Vidiot" (brown@vidiot.com) and all the others (many of whom I'm probably unjustly leaving out). 0.3) Where the Author Can Be Reached This FAQ is an evolving document, and it is probably either incorrect in parts or is missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact the author, Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (prefered address for private E-mail) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.4) Where Can I Get a Copy of This FAQ? FTP: As of now, this FAQ is available from two FTP sites: The first one is my own personal folder available in one of AOL's own FTP sites; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found here. (NOTE: Enter the menus as shown when trying to reach this site, as AOL does *not* allow a "dir" listing of the root directory of that site, as it would contain up to 2.5 million different folders!) (ALSO NOTE: My other FAQ's and episode guides are available from this same FTP site.) It can be found at either of the following addresses: ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ *or* ftp://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ The second FTP site is the Tardis FTP site; all manner of TV FAQ's and episode guides are available from here. However, the version of the FAQ avilable here is several *months* OUT-OF-DATE (so use my FTP site at AOL if you can). Still, the address for Tardis is: ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/public/media/tv/collections/tardis/meta_info/ WWW (the Web): Presently there are two Web sites which contains this FAQ (that I know of). (If anyone else wants to make it available at their site, please let me know!) At present, the Web site for this FAQ (in HTML format) will be found through my home page. It is presently under construction, but most of it can be found at: http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/FAQ-Intro.html *or* http://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/FAQ-Intro.html The second site is the "Avimall" Archive for TV episode guides and FAQ's. The version of the FAQ found here in text format (i.e. PREformated or non-HMTL format). It can be reached through: http://AVIMALL.COM/entertain/index.html 0.5) The Main Internet TV Group: rec.arts.tv *rec.arts.tv* is the primary usenet newsgroup for discussion of all TV shows and related subjects. It's official newsgroup description is: "The boob tube, its history, and past and current shows." *rec.arts.tv* is widely distributed as part of the full "big 7" usenet newsfeed (e.g. comp., misc., news., rec., sci., soc., talk.). Unlike some other rec.* groups, *rec.arts.tv* is unmoderated. Any questions concerning a TV show, foreign or domestic, should probably directed here first. It is appropriate to discuss any TV show or movie; first-run or rerun; network, cable or syndicated show in *rec.arts.tv*. Besides *rec.arts.tv*, there are other more specialized TV groups, including the rec.arts.sf.tv.*, rec.arts.startrek.*, rec.arts.tv.soaps.*, rec.arts.tv.uk.* hierarchies, and the more limitedly distributed alt.tv.* hierarchy. But *rec.arts.tv* is the primary usenet group for general TV discussion (i.e. *do* start here first). 0.6) How Often Will This FAQ Be Posted? All parts of this FAQ will be posted once a month to rec.arts.tv (and perhaps to news.answers, etc.), either on the first of the month or around the first Monday of the month (holidays excepted). If it is necessary, Part 1 of this FAQ will be posted more often (likely, bimonthly). However this FAQ can also be obtained via FTP and the Web (see Section 0.4 above), and information in this (e.g. part of the introduction to this FAQ) may also be posted more often (perhaps bimonthly or weekly). 0.7) What Are Usenet/Newsgroups? How Do I Access Them? What Are Mailing Lists? If you've actually obtained this FAQ, you probably know the answer to the question of what usenet is and how it can be accessed. But in case you don't, this section will try and explain usenet, and mailing lists. Usenet Newsgroups: ------------------ How usenet works is a complicated question, well beyond the scope of this FAQ (for more information, I advise the "Usenet_Software_History" FAQ, posted to news.answers and news.software.readers, among other groups). It is easier to explain what it is. Usenet functions much like any electronic bulletin board: messages are available from a local news server, and these messages can be uploaded to a user's computer for reading at the user's discretion. In turn, the reader has the ability, if he or she so chooses, to download, or "post", a message of his/her own from his/her computer, back to the local news server. The difference with usenet is that a message that is posted, rather than just staying at the original news server, is actually passed on to other news servers, first throughout the country, and then throughout the world. In this way, usenet operates as "the bulletin board for the world". In order to access usenet, you need three things: 1) an internet hook-up (e.g. TCP/IP, PPP, SLIP, etc.), 2) the address of a local news server, and 3) a news reader. The first two factors are generally out of your control (i.e. whether they are available). But the third factor, the news reader, *is* generally in your control. Here is a list of some popular news readers, and the operating systems in which they operate: News reader Operating sys. Description ----------- -------------- ----------- Pine UNIX News & mail reader for UNIX "novices"; available at: ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu /pine/pine.tar.Z tin UNIX, OS/2 Newsreader for intermediate UNIX users, and for OS/2 users; available at ftp://ftp.germany.eu.net /pub/news/newsreader/ rn, trn UNIX UNIX newsreader for more advanced users; quite popular with UNIX users; available from: ftp://ftp.uu.net /networking/news /readers/trn/ (trn) ftp://ftp.academ.com/ (rn) nn UNIX Another UNIX newsreader for advanced usenet users; has a substantial following among UNIX users; available from: ftp://uniwa.uwa.edu.au /pub/nn/ NewsWatcher Machintosh An excellent newsreader (the best one out there, in the opinion of this author); needs MacTCP; available from: ftp://ftp.acns.nwu.edu /pub/newswatcher InterNews Machintosh A Mac newsreader; needs MacTCP; available from: ftp://ftp.apple.com/ Nuntius Machintosh Another Mac newsreader; needs MacTCP; available from: ftp://ftp.cit.cornell.edu /pub/mac/comm/test Trumpet DOS/Windows A newsreader available for both DOS and Windows; available from: ftp://ftp.utas.edu.au /pc/trumpet/ (DOS) ftp://ftp.utas.edu.au /pc/trumpet /wintrump/ (Win) WinVN Windows A fairly good newsreader for Windows users; available from: ftp://ftp.ksc.nasa.gov/ Actually though, usenet is more than one bulletin board; it is actually made up of many bulletin boards (something on the order of 14,000 different groups at last count). In some respects, each newsgroup can be considered "an electronic club" made up of members (i.e. posters) with similar interests in the newsgroup subject matter. All these different usenet groups have been categorized by subject hierachy. Of these hierarchies, the most important are the so-called "Big 7" hierarchies: "Big 7" Hierarchy: Description: ------------------ ------------ comp.* Stands for "computer" or "computing"; all the groups are devoted to computer-related subjects misc.* Stands for "miscellaneous"; a hodge-podge of different subjects can be found in this hierarchy news.* Stands for "news" or "newsgroups"; this hierarchy exists for discussion of usenet itself; several useful groups are here, especially news.answers where FAQ's can be found rec.* Stands for "recreation"; groups devoted to recreational subjects, such as TV, books, sports, etc. sci.* Stands for "science"; discussions of a scientific, and often academic nature; some interesting groups here soc.* Stands for "society"; discussions of a sociological, and sometimes of a politcal sort take place in this hierarchy talk.* Stands for "talk"; groups devoted to (sometimes heated) discussions of politics, etc. The next most important is the "alt." hierarchy, which can be described as follows: alt.* Stands for "alternative"; a grab bag of many subjects; because of some of its controversial parts, it is not carried by all sites There are many good alt.* groups. However, there are also many frivolous alt.* groups (see below), which is another reason the alt.* hierarchy isn't carried everywhere: it takes up a lot (some say too much) room on a server, and once created, groups cannot be (easily) deleted from the hierarchy. In addition to that, there are also other heirarchies (e.g. info.*), and several national and regional hierarchies, but they are generally small, and aren't propagated everywhere. Mailing Lists: -------------- Mailing lists are in some ways similiar to newsgroups, in that they are also like "electronic clubs" made up of members interested in a certain subject. But unlike newsgroups, mail lists work through the exchange of E-mail messages between members. For a typical mail list, all the E-mail messages on the list are sent to a single central mail server which then processes the messages, and sends copies of those messages out to all mail list members. It is explained below how to subscribe to one these mail lists. The problem with mail lists are two fold. Firstly, the mail volume generated by a list can easily overwhelm a member, because popular lists can easily generate 20, 30, 50 or even more messages a day. While some lists are available in "digest" form (which combines all the separate E- mails sent to the list into one long message sent to the list members) which can somewhat overcome this problem, the size of the list is often too much for casual members. Secondly, mail lists, much more than most usenet groups, tend to be dominated by a few members. Some people prefer mail lists to usenet newsgroups, as they prefer this more "intimate" format. But mail lists are an acquired taste for many. 0.8) CHANGED/ADDED: Since last version - no new rec.* group(s) were added - the following alt.tv.* groups added to Section 1.2.1a: - alt.tv.all-my-children - alt.tv.days-of-our-lives - alt.tv.er.creative - alt.tv.general-hospital - alt.tv.magnificent-7 - alt.tv.one-life-to-live - alt.tv.port-charles - alt.tv.working - alt.tv.x-files.analysis - the following new alt.tv.* groups were added Section 1.2.1b, or were moved to Section 1.2.1b due to cancelation: - alt.tv.mannix - the following new alt.fan.* groups were added to Section 1.2.2 - none - The following new TV groups or hierarchies have been added to Section 1.3. - aus.tv.pay - the following Mailing Lists have been added (or changed): - B5/Remember WENN (NEW: MAJORDOMO@mLists.net) - Diagnosis: Murder (NEW: LISTSERV@talklist.com) 1.0) USENET GROUPS FOR TV SHOWS NOTE: The following lists are edited from the original versions by Melissa Wauford (mwauford@utkvx.utk.edu) in her "TV Discussion Groups" FAQ. She has not posted her FAQ in years, so I've taken over the job, and what follows is the full number of TV related newsgroups, to the best of my knowledge. 1.1) The REC.* Hierarchy The following newsgroups should be available at all sites which receive the full USENET (i.e. "big 7") newsfeed. If your site receives only a partial feed, you may have to talk to your News Administrator about accessing these groups. And the best thing about the rec.* hierarchy? When a show gets canceled, the group can be deleted! (Unlike the alt.* hierarchy...) Usenet Group: Description (TV shows involved, etc.): ------------- -------------------------------------- rec.arts.tv General discussion about television shows, all kinds, all countries; the *main* TV usenet group rec.arts.animation Discussion of various kinds of animation including animated television shows rec.arts.anime.* Heirarchy of newsgroups (anime, anime.info, anime.marketplace, anime.stories) for discussion of Japanese animation on tv and in movies rec.arts.comics.other-media Discussion of comic book characters in other media, including in cartoons and in TV shows and TV movies rec.arts.comics.* Hierarchy of newsgroups (including .other-media (see above), .dc.universe, .marvel.universe, .marvel.xbooks) which discusses comic book characters, including on TV (e.g "The X-Men") rec.arts.disney.* Hierarchy of newsgroups (including .animation, .misc) which discusses the Disney media empire, including its various cartoons on TV rec.arts.drwho Discussion of the British program Dr. Who rec.arts.sf.tv Discussion of TV shows which can be classified as speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, horror, etc.); this is the *main* stop for fans of SFTV, regardless of the show! rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5 Discussion of syndicated show Babylon 5 rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.info Announcements regarding events, etc. for the syndicated show Babylon 5 rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5 .moderated Discussion of syndicated show Babylon 5 (NOTE: This group is *moderated*, and inappropriate posts will be *rejected*. Read the charter before attempting to post to this group!) rec.arts.sf.tv.quantum-leap Discussion of the classic NBC sci-fi time travel show Quantum Leap rec.arts.sf.* Hierarchy for the discussion of all forms of science fiction, including some other groups that might discuss sci-fi on TV rec.arts.startrek.* Hierarchy of newsgroups (.current, .fandom, .info, .misc, .reviews, .tech) which discuss various aspects of Star Trek, old and new rec.arts.tv.interactive Discussion of the coming new evolution of television into the interactive medium, how it works, and what will come of it rec.arts.tv.mst3k.* Hierarchy of newsgroups (including .misc and .announce) which discuss various aspects of the Comedy Central show Mystery Science Theater 3000 rec.arts.tv.soaps.* Hierarchy (including .abc, .cbs and .misc) of the discussion of daytime and nighttime soap operas rec.arts.tv.uk.* Hierarchy of newsgroups (.comedy, .coronation-st, .eastenders, .emmerdale, .misc) which discuss British television programs. NOTE: rec.arts.tv.uk.misc is the *primary* UK TV group. 1.2) The ALT.* Hierarchy The following newsgroups are carried on the "alt" feed. Because of the controversial nature of some alt.* groups, as well as the vast size of the feed, many sites do not receive the alt.* feed, or carry only parts of it. Talk to your News Administrator if you need access to one of these groups and do not currently have it. 1.2.1) The ALT.TV.* Hierarchy Number of groups (at last count): almost 200 (!!) The proliferation of alt.tv.* groups is quickly diluting whatever effect this hierarchy was supposed to have had. Many of the groups are empty, or near-empty most of the time. Many are dedicated to shows no longer on the air. And a new group seems to be added weekly. Still, there are a number of high traffic, very good alt.tv.* newsgroups devoted to some of today's most popular shows, and they are well worth subscribing to. In any case, what follow are the lists of the alt.tv.* groups for "current" TV shows, and for "classic" (i.e. no longer first-run) TV shows, as the alt.tv.* hierarchy stood at the last writing. 1.2.1a) ALT.TV.* Groups for "Current" Shows Number of groups (at last count): > 100 (!)
