Copyright, Ian J. Ball, 1995, 1996. DISCLAIMER: I will attempt to keep this FAQ as updated as possible. But an absence of any item from this list does not necessarily mean that the item doesn't exist. And I can't promise that I will be able to include everything in this FAQ (as of now, I am sticking to TV shows from English speaking countries, especially the U.S.). Further, certain items may contain typos, so be careful when entering items from this list. Any errors should be forwarded to the author. 0.1) What is a FAQ? What is an Episode Guide? Etc. FAQ's & FAQL's: A FAQ (short for "Frequently Asked Questions") or a FAQL (short for "Frequently Asked Questions List") is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the Internet to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards), or to an online service bulletin board or BBS, to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. For instance, a FAQ about a TV show will attempt to answer questions about that TV show, and will be posted to some relevant usenet groups (and BB's on the on-line services) in hopes of answering the common questions asked the TV show(s). Hopefully, a FAQ (like this one) will mean that people will not have to post a message to get an answer to their question: they can just wait for the FAQ to be posted. Episode Guides & Summaries: An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. Episode guides provide a short synopsis of the plot of each episode, and sometimes other information, including episode titles, the credits for that episode, original airdates and/or prodcution code numbers. They are sometimes posted to the relevant newsgroup(s), or they are found via FTP or the Web. Episode summaries are *much* more detailed plot synopses, but usually of only one particular episode. In other words, while an episode guide is a long list of short plot synopses for all the episodes of a show or a season, an episode summary is a document that deals only one episode in detail. Shows with a very dedicated fandom (e.g. Star Trek, Babylon 5, ER, etc.) tend to have episode summaries more than they have episode guides. Episode Lists: Episode lists provide only a list of the number of episodes aired and the episode titles for a show, but *without* episode plot descriptions. Others go further and will list original first-run airdates and/or production codes. If it doesn't contain plot synopses, it's an episode list (*not* an episode guide). 0.2) Acknowledgments A special acknowledgement goes to Dave Chapman (dave@cheers.demon.co.uk; this E-mail address may no longer be correct), former maintainer of the Tardis (TV) FTP site located at: ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/media/tv/collection/tardis/ who tirlessly collected all the available TV FAQ's and episode guides when he was the maintainer of Tardis, and without whose efforts this FAQ would probably not be possible. And special thanks to Bob Hirsch (FTPAdmin@aol.com) and the FTP team on AOL who have made the "Members" AOL FTP site available to users for WWW and FTP sites, so that this FAQ (and my other FAQ's and episode guides) can have a permanent home for updates: ftp://members.aol.com/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/; see the "README" or the "README.html" file for more information). I'd also like to thank the people who have helped me along the way, both with this FAQ, and with other questions, including: - Pete Brennan (pete@tech.grumman.com) - Cliff Chen (fidodido@pacificnet.net) - Tony Cianfaglione (ab616@ccn.cs.dal.ca) - Loren Heisey (lorenh@hpcvra.cv.hp.com) - Joshua Kreitzer (j-kreitzer@nwu.edu) - Karla Robinson (karla@pop.uky.edu) - Rick Shae (rickshae@ix.netcom.com) - Nick Tang (aq010@FreeNet.Carleton.CA) - David Tamkin (dattier@miso.wwa.com) - Tom Walsh (avs@netport.com) - "Vidiot" (brown@vidiot.com) and all the others (many of whom I'm probably unjustly leaving out). 0.3) Where the Author Can Be Reached This FAQ is an evolving document, and it is probably either incorrect in parts or is missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact the author, Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (prefered address for private E-mail; may be a delay before response) ijb@ucla.edu (my work address; only use in emergency) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.4) Where Can I Get a Copy of This FAQ? FTP: As of now, this FAQ is available from two FTP sites: The first one is my own personal folder available in one of AOL's own FTP sites; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found here. (NOTE: Enter the menus as shown when trying to reach this site, as AOL does *not* allow a "dir" listing of the root directory of that site, as it would contain up to 2.5 million different folders!) (ALSO NOTE: My other FAQ's and episode guides are available from this same FTP site.) It can be found at either of the following addresses: ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ *or* ftp://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/rec.arts.tv-FAQ/ The second FTP site is the Tardis FTP site; all manner of TV FAQ's and episode guides are available from here. However, the version of the FAQ avilable here is several *months* OUT-OF-DATE (so use my FTP site at AOL if you can). Still, the address for Tardis is: ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/public/media/tv/collections/tardis/meta_info/ WWW (the Web): Presently there are two Web sites which contains this FAQ (that I know of), and one of them is not totally complete at this time. (If anyone else wants to make it available at their site, please let me know!) At present, the Web site for this FAQ (in HTML format) will be found through my home page. It is presently under construction, but most of it can be found at: http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/ratv-FAQ-Intro.html *or* http://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/ratv/ratv-FAQ-Intro.html The second site is the new "Avimall" Archive for TV episode guides and FAQ's. The version of the FAQ found here in text format (i.e. PREformated or non-HMTL format). It can be reached through: http://AVIMALL.COM/entertain/index.html 0.5) The Main Internet TV Group: rec.arts.tv *rec.arts.tv* is the primary usenet newsgroup for discussion of all TV shows and related subjects. It's official newsgroup description is: "The boob tube, its history, and past and current shows." *rec.arts.tv* is widely distributed as part of the full "big 7" usenet newsfeed (e.g. comp., misc., news., rec., sci., soc., talk.). Unlike some other rec.* groups, *rec.arts.tv* is unmoderated. Any questions concerning a TV show, foreign or domestic, should probably directed here first. It is appropriate to discuss any TV show or movie; first-run or rerun; network, cable or syndicated show in *rec.arts.tv*. Besides *rec.arts.tv*, there are other more specialized TV groups, including the rec.arts.sf.tv.*, rec.arts.startrek.*, rec.arts.tv.soaps.*, rec.arts.tv.uk.* hierarchies, and the more limitedly distributed alt.tv.* hierarchy. But *rec.arts.tv* is the primary usenet group for general TV discussion (i.e. *do* start here first). 0.6) How Often Will This FAQ Be Posted? All parts of this FAQ will be posted once a month to rec.arts.tv (and perhaps to news.answers, etc.), either on the first of the month or around the first Monday of the month (holidays excepted). If it is necessary, Part 1 of this FAQ will be posted more often (likely, bimonthly). However this FAQ can also be obtained via FTP and the Web (see Section 0.4 above), and information in this (e.g. part of the introduction to this FAQ) may also be posted more often (perhaps bimonthly or weekly). 0.7) What Is FTP? How Do I Access It? FTP stands for "file transfer protocol". It is an example of one of the internet's biggest draws for people: the ability of users to download a large variety of different files, programs and applications from known, centrally located archives. On UNIX, VAX and DOS systems with an internet connection, FTP is pretty simple to access: simply type "ftp " (e.g. type "ftp ftp.apple.com") to access the FTP site, and then use the typical commands (e.g. "cd", "dir", "get", etc.) to navigate menu levels and to download files. On Mac and Windows computers with an internet connection, generally an application is used to access FTP. On the Mac platform, the most popular application for FTP access is Fetch (which is avialable from ftp://ftp.dartmouth.edu/), and which requires MacTCP. There are similar Windows programs, such as WinFTP. 0.8) What is in each sub-Part of this Part of the FAQ? As this FAQ was developed, it soon became apparent that the WWW (and FTP) Parts of the rec.arts.tv FAQ were becoming too large to post as single documents. In addition, these Parts were too cumbersome to convert in their entirety into HTML versions: the user would end up with very large documents to download, which can be a problem when the connection is slow. Indeed, this is one of the principal problems with some of the other main TV WWW sites (see Section 1.1 of Part III.A of this FAQ). I decided that the most logical answer would be to split Part 3 (and the FTP Part) of this FAQ into two sub-Parts based on content. So Parts 3 & the FTP of this FAQ are actually made up of 2 sub-Parts: - Part A, which is devoted to the main TV (WWW or FTP) sites, and to the Internet sites for all current "first-run" shows. - Part B, which is devoted to Internet sites for "classic" TV shows (i.e. those shows that are no longer "first-run"). This seemed to be a logical division, as most of the posts to rec.arts.tv usually involved people either interested in sites for old shows *or* (usually more newbie-like) people interested in sites for currently first-run shows. So, keep this division in mind when browsing through Parts 3 or the FTP Part of this FAQ. 0.9) CHANGED/ADDED: Since last version The following things have been changed or added since the last version of this FAQ: - No FTP sites with multiple episode guides were added to Section 1.2: - No new show's FTP sites were added to, or modified in, Section 1.3 - No changes to Section 4.1.1: the "COMEDY" Section - No changes to Section 4.1.2: the "DRAMA" Section - No changes to Section 4.1.3: the "SCI-FI" Section - No changes were made to Section 4.1.4: the "MISCELLANEA" Section - No changes were made to Section 4.2 and 4.3: the "CANADIAN" and "U.K." Sections 1.0) THE FTP SITES FOR TV FAQ'S & EPISODE GUIDES: 1.1) The General FTP Sites for TV FAQ's & Episode Guides: The following is the list of the six most important FTP sites for users interested in downloading TV episode guides and FAQ's: 1) ftp://SRC.DOC.IC.AC.UK/public/media/tv/collections/tardis/ The formerly "complete" FTP site for episode guides; the "Tardis" site used to have the most up-to-date copies of almost every guide/FAQ that's out there, but Tardis has *not* been updated since April of 1995, so (like ftp.uu.net) the site is now INCOMPLETE and guides are often OUT-OF-DATE.. Mailto: tv-archive@cheers.demon.co.uk (may be moribund) 2) ftp://FTP.UU.NET/usenet/rec.arts.tv/ The "official" FTP site for episode guides; this site used to be the official site for *rec.arts.tv*, but it is no longer maintained, so the site is now INCOMPLETE and guides are often OUT-OF-DATE. Mailto: n/a 3) ftp://RTFM.MIT.EDU/pub/usenet-by-hierarchy/; or ftp://RTFM.MIT.EDU/pub/usenet/news.answers/tv/ An FTP site with numerious FAQ's for usenet groups, including many alt.tv.*, rec.arts.*, etc. groups, or those posted in news.answers. Mailto: news-answers-request@mit.edu 4) ftp://SFLOVERS.RUTGERS.EDU/pub/sf-lovers/ The most "complete" FTP site for episode guides for *Sci-fi* TV shows; however I have noticed that many of the FAQ's and guides here are a little dated. Mail to: sf-lovers-request@rutgers.edu 5) ftp://FTP.FUNET.FI/pub/culture/tv+film/ The main European FTP site for episode guides; this site seems to mirror the guides from other sites; it is fairly, but by no means totally, complete. Mailto: staff@ftp.funet.fi 1.2) FTP Sites with Multiple Episode Guides Here are three (that's right! down to only 3!) FTP sites that contain multiple episode guides, but are not full TV episode guide/FAQ archives like the sites in Section 1.1 above: 1) ftp://FTP.HYPERION.COM/pub/ An FTP site containing several episode guides for sci-fi TV: Babylon 5, Brisco County, Captain Power, Earth 2, Time Trax, Young Indiana Chronicles. Also contains information about the Sci-Fi cable channel in the _/Sci-Fi-Channel/_ folder. Mailto: n/a 2) ftp://FTP.NETCOM.COM/pub/gu/guides/ This FTP site contains several episode guides by Dean Adams for various FOX comedies. Mailto: dadams@netcom.com 3) ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/, or ftp://USERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/ An FTP site containing this very FAQ, the Saved by the Bell FAQ, and episode guides for California Dreams, Cobra, The Five Mrs. Buchanans, Hang Time, The Nanny, Renegade, Running the Halls and Under Suspicion. Mailto: IJBall@aol.com 1.3) TV Show-Specific FTP Sites What follows is the list of (mostly fan inspired and maintained) FTP sites for episode guides, FAQ's, images and sounds for a variety of TV shows: For Show: FTP Site: --------- --------- Animaniacs ftp://ACME.FTP.COM/ ftp://FTP.PH.UTEXAS.EDU/pub/misc/animaniacs/ Babylon 5 ftp://FTP.HYPERION.COM/pub/Babylon-5/ ftp://FTP.UML.EDU/Babylon-5/ Batman: the Animated Series ftp://FTP.MATH.UFL.EDU/pub/comics/Batman /BTAS/ Beakman's World ftp://FTP.STD.COM/pub/beakman/ Beverley Hills, 90210 ftp://FTP.TCP.COM/pub/90210/ Blakes 7 ftp://FTP.LYSATOR.LIU.SE/pub/blake7/ Clarissa Explains It All ftp://FTP.EE.SURREY.AC.UK/pub/images /tv-shows/clarissa/ ftp://FTP.TCP.COM/pub/clarissa/ Combat! ftp://FTP.ALEGRIA.COM/pub/combat/ Dr Who ftp://FRONTIOS.NIAGARA.EDU/pub/Doctor_Who/ Earth 2 ftp://FTP.STGENESIS.ORG/pub/sci-fi/earth2/ Forever Knight ftp://FTP.CAC.PSU.EDU/pub/people/lms5/ Friends ftp://FTP.DARTMOUTH.EDU/pub/friends/ Highlander ftp://MITHRAL.IIT.EDU/pub/highlander/ Homicide: Life on the Street ftp://FTP.NETCOM.COM/pub/vj/vjl/Homicide/ The Late Show with David Letterman ftp://FTP.MCS.NET/mcsnet.users/barnhart /letterman/ Lois & Clark ftp://FTP.BEST.COM/pub/hyperion /Lois-and-Clark/ ftp://FTP.UML.EDU/TV/Lois-and-Clark/ Magna ftp://FTP.TCP.COM/pub/anime-manga/ Melrose Place ftp://FTP.TCP.COM/pub/melrose-place/ My So-Called Life ftp://FTP.NUTECNET.COM/pub/wilson/mscl/ Mystery Science Theater 3000 ftp://FTP.EE.PDX.EDU/pub/mst3k/ Northern Exposure ftp://GATE.NET/pub/users/kimi/northern-exp/ ftp://JHUNIX.HCF.JHU.EDU/pub/usagi/ ftp://TNM.COM/pub/MetaNet/Nexp/ Parker Lewis ftp://FTP.CS.PDX.EDU/pub/flamingos/ Party of Five ftp://FTP.WWA.COM/pub/party-of-five/files/ Quantum Leap ftp://ZIGGY.CISCO.COM/ql-archive/ Saved by the Bell ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/SbtB/ seaQuest, DSV (a.k.a. seaQuest 2032) ftp://FTP.HYPERION.COM/pub/tv/Seaquest/ ftp://FTP.STGENESIS.ORG/pub/sci-fi/seaQuest/ The Simpsons ftp://BUSOP.CC.WAYNE.EDU/ ftp://FTP.CS.WIDENER.EDU/pub/simpsons/ Space 1999 ftp://FTP.TEMPLE.EDU/pub/entertainment /space:1999/ ftp://QUACK.KFU.COM/pub/space-1999/ Star Trek, etc. ftp://FTP.MCS.NET/mcsnet.users/trek-reviews/tv/ Reboot ftp://FTP.INWAP.COM/reboot/text/episodes.txt Red Dwarf ftp://TOASTER.EE.UBC.CA/pub/red-dwarf/ Tiny Toons Adventures ftp://FTP.PH.UTEXAS.EDU/pub/misc/tta/ The Transformers ftp://SATURN.ACS.OAKLAND.EDU/pub/transformers/ Twin Peaks ftp://LUTETIA.UOREGON.EDU/pub/twin-peaks/ VR.5 ftp://PEARL.SRL.COM/pub/vr5/ The X-Files ftp://MTP034.MIS.SEMI.HARRIS.COM/ Xuxa ftp://RT66.COM/users/cj/xuxa/ 2.0) FAQ's BY TV SHOW (via FTP): --------------------------- Note that in many of these cases, these FAQ's also contain episode guides in the FAQ. Some of the shows with episode guides, especially those that have their own alt.tv.* or rec.arts.* groups, often also have FAQ's, so check that section to be certain. The episode guide section for this FAQ only contains guides for English-language shows. This episode guide section is divided into three parts by nation: guides for shows from Canada first, guides for shows from the United Kingdom second, and guides for shows from the Untied States third. 4.1) US TV Episode Guides As there are many episode guides for US TV shows, I have attempted to divide this section into 4 parts by genre. Of course, a few people may feel that some shows have been miscategorized, but no system is perfect. The division is as follows: - 4.1.1) COMEDY: This section contains shows that are comedies, i.e. situation-comedies. Most half-hour shows will be found here (exceptions: the Monkees, Moonlighting are also found here). - 4.1.2) DRAMA: This section contains shows that are dramas, or shows that are more drama-oriented than comedy-oriented (e.g. Northern Exposure). Most 1 hour shows will tend to be found here.
