Copyright, Ian J. Ball, 1994. 0.1) What is a FAQ? What is an Episode Guide? A FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) or a FAQL (Frequently Asked Questions List) is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the internet (or to an online service) to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards) to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. For instance, this FAQ serves to answer questions about the TV show Saved by the Bell, and so will be posted to some relevant usenet groups (and BB's in America OnLine) in hopes of answering the common questions asked about Saved by the Bell. Hopefully, this FAQ will mean that people will not have to post a message to get the answer to their question. An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. Some episode guides list only the number of episodes aired and the episode titles for a show. Others go further and will list original first-run airdates and/or production codes (an example of this is Daniel Andersson's (daniel@algonet.se) "Short Guides" for Saved by the Bell, California Dreams and Running the Halls which are complete episode lists). Many episode guides actually provide a short synopsis of the plot of each episode, and even the credits for that episode. The episode guide for this FAQ (which is Part II of this FAQ) is an example of the latter. 0.2) Acknowledgments Special thanks to my co-authors, Christy Ballard, Daniel Andersson (whose Short Guides provided information used in this and other FAQ's), Ivo Kroone and Peter B. Murray, without whom proper episode guides for Saved by the Bell would not have been possible. Thanks also to (in no particular order) David Tamkin, Aaron Portraz (AP78@aol.com), Don Bagert, Ken Higginson, Scott and Dawn Kilbourn, Rick Kitchen, Niels (niranr@inet.uni-c.dk), Joseph Ross, Mark Conkle, Aaron Binns, Chris Sidi (& friend), Deron Brosh, Mike Ogburn, Vincent A. Sacca and all the others who helped me compile this FAQ. 0.3) Where the Author Can Be Reached This is the third edition of this FAQ, and may be either incorrect in parts or missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact the author, Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (primary E-mail address) ijb@ucla.edu (for emergencies *only*) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.4) The Saved by the Bell Group: alt.tv.saved-bell *alt.tv.saved-bell* is the primary usenet newsgroup for discussion of the TV series "Saved by the Bell" (and related topics, such as other T-NBC/Peter Engel shows like "California Dreams", etc.). If your location does not presently subscribe to this group, and you wish to get it at your location, ask your news/system administrator to subscribe to this group. Another group by the name of *alt.tv.saved-by-the-bell* also exists, but it is a very low-traffic, limitedly distributed group. If your location only gets the group *alt.tv.saved-by-the-bell*, and does not get *alt.tv.saved-bell*, you should ask your system administrator to get *alt.tv.saved-bell*. Do NOT use *alt.tv.saved-by-the-bell*. Sometimes, people post questions about or information on "Saved by the Bell" to the usenet group *rec.arts.tv*, or even to other groups. If you see such a post, please direct them to *alt.tv.saved-bell* whenever possible (this group could use more posters!). 0.5) Where Can I Find Saved by the Bell Discussions on the On-line Services? See Part 1, Section 0.5 of this FAQ. 0.6) Where Can Saved by the Bell Be Seen Internationally? See Part 1, Section 0.6 of this FAQ. 0.7) Where Can I Find Copies of this FAQ, or Daniel Andersson's Short Guides, Through the Web (WWW) or by FTP? The Web (WWW): Personally, I advise checking out my SbtB Web site first, as it is the most complete of any SbtB WWW site: http://HOMEPAGE.MAC.COM/ijball/SbtB/Home.html http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall/WWW/SbtB/Home.html (moribund) For more information, see Part 1, Section 0.7 of this FAQ. FTP: See my FTP site: ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/SbtB/ 1.0) THE SAVED BY THE BELL EPISODE LISTS: 1.1) The Proper Order of Saved by the Bell Episodes Based on the Production Numbers As stated in the FAQ, NBC takes great liberties with the airing order of its T-NBC shows. While the proper chronological order probably most corresponds to the production codes (which is usually the way Saved by the Bell is aired in rerun syndication), NBC totally ignored that order. In fact it aired some episodes completely in the wrong seasons! Before we get to that, though, here is (what I have heard is) the airing order of "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" (the 8th Grade incarnation of SbtB) on the Disney Channel. (NOTE: The GMMB pilot aired on NBC, originally in the timeslot of "The Facts of Life".) Needless to say, all dates are tentative: Num Prod No Episode Title Air Date ---- --------- ------------------------ ---------- 8.0 Pilot 07/11/87 8.1 Summer Love 11/30/88 8.2 Love Letters 12/07/88 8.3 Wall Street 12/14/88 8.4 Leaping to Conclusions 12/21/88 8.5 Parents and Teachers 12/28/88 8.6 The Showdown 01/04/89 8.7 Save the Last Dance for Me 02/04/89 8.8 The Boy Who Cried Rat 02/11/89 8.9 Let's Get Together 02/18/89 8.10 Practical Jokes 02/25/89 8.11 Stevie 03/04/89 8.12 Clubs and Cliques 03/11/89 8.13 The Mentor 03/18/89 According to Daniel Andersson, who has access to the syndication production information, NBC lists seasons by the production list this way (NOTE: What I call "Season IVa" (the "Tori" Garde 12 season), NBC called "Season V"): Season I 6311-6330 Season II 6331-6343 Season III 6344-6362 Season IV 6363-6385 Season IVa 6451-6461 So using this is as a (very loose) guide, this would be the proper chronological order of the episodes and seasons, based on the production codes, according to me (and seasons according to NBC where you see "--" dividers). The one exception to this order based on production codes is the "Graduation" Special which belongs after the Valentine's Day retrospective episode: Num Prod No Episode Title Air Date ---- --------- ------------------------ ---------- Season I: 9.1 (6311) King of the Hill 12/09/89 9.5 (6312) Fatal Distraction 09/09/89 9.6 (6313) Screech's Woman 09/16/89 9.4 (6314) The Gift 09/08/89 9.3 (6315) The Lisa Card 08/28/89 9.14 (6316) The Election 11/18/89 9.7 (6317) Aloha Slater 09/23/89 9.2 (6318) Dancing to the Max 08/20/89 9.8 (6319) The Substitute 09/30/89 9.9 (6320) Cream for a Day 10/07/89 9.13 (6321) The Mamas & The Papas 11/11/89 9.18 (6322) The Babysitters 12/01/90* 9.10 (6323) Pinned to the Mat 10/14/89 9.11 (6324) Beauty and the Screech 10/21/89 9.15 (6325) The Zack Tapes 12/02/89 9.12 (6326) The Friendship Business 11/04/89 9.17 (6327) Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind 11/23/90?* 9.20 (6328) Slater's Friend 11/28/92* 9.16 (6329) Save That Tiger 12/16/89 9.19 (6330) Screech's Birthday 11/14/92* * Aired in entirely the wrong season/year. -- Season II: 10.6 (6331) Blind Dates 10/13/90 10.1 (6332) The Prom 09/08/90 10.3a (6333) From Nurse to Worse 12/15/90 10.3 (6334) Save the Max 09/22/90 10.11 (6335) 1-900-CRUSHED 11/17/90 10.4 (6336) Driver's Education 09/29/90 10.7 (6337) Rent-A-Pop 10/20/90 10.8 (6338) Miss Bayside 10/27/90 10.2 (6339) Zack's War 09/15/90 10.10 (6340) Model Students 11/10/90 10.12 (6341) Running Zack 11/24/90 10.5 (6342) House Party 10/06/90 10.9 (6343) Jessie's Song 11/03/90 -- 10.13 (6344) The Fabulous Belding Boys 12/09/90 10.15 (6345) The Glee Club 12/23/90 10.14 (6346) Breaking Up Is Hard to Undo 12/16/90 10.17 (6347) The Video Yearbook 11/07/92* 10.18 (6348) Snow White and the Seven Dorks 11/14/92* * Aired in entirely the wrong season/year. Carter NOTE: There is a pilot episode of Good Morning, Miss Bliss which did not have the same cast as in the rest of the series, except for Hayley Mills as Miss Bliss. The pilot aired on NBC in "The Facts of Life's" timeslot. In the pilot the main "student" character was played by Brian Austin Green (of Beverly Hills, 90210 fame), but his character's name wasn't Zack Morris. Instead, Green played a super-serious student who always wore business suits. Green's character's friend was played by Jaleel White (of Family Matters fame). Oliver Clark of "The Bob Newhart Show" played the first Principal Belding, but his first name was Gerald, *not* Richard. Hayley Mills and maybe the actress who played her girlfriend were the only holdovers from the pilot to the rest of the GMMB episodes. Beyond this, I do not know who else was in the pilot, as I have only heard from only two person who have seen it. If you have, or you know about it, please drop me a line. Episode 8.0 (# 0): Pilot 04/11/87(?) [Copyright 1988] Episode 8.2 (# 2): "Love Letters" (8.2) Mr. Jerry Vic -Randy Hamilton Miss Bliss intercepts a note from Screech (but written by Zack) to Lisa, and general chaos ensues. Episode 8.3 (# 3): "Wall Street" Zack breaks his Dad's videocam and uses the class' money to invest in a risky stock, costing Miss Bliss out of pocket money. Episode 8.4 (# 4): "Leaping to Conclusions" (8.4) Mr. Morton -Deryl Carroll Nikki refuses to do Mr. Morton's class frog dissection. This episode must have aired at the beginning of either the '89, '90 or '91 seasons. (1992 is when the "T-NBC" line-up, including "California Dreams" and "Name Your Own Adventure", started. Based on the description, I'm guessing that this promotional episode aired in 1990. The exact date of when this episode aired is unknown, but it was likely either the week before the season premiere of SbtB, or the week of the premiere (I'm guessing the latter). Here is the description of this episode from steve@ylorlando.com: > Every year NBC would do a special "season-opener" of the Saturday > morning lineup where they would go through and introduce all the > shows for that season. It was an annual ordeal, but the one year > involved the whole cast of "Saved By The Bell." My remembrance of > the plot is that it was the first day of school. However, one or > two of the characters were together (my guess is Zack and Screech) > and they ended up in this mystical world. Belding couldn't figure out > why they weren't at school yet, and kept threatening to give Zack > detention on the first day of school! Eventually, Belding starts > releasing the other students one or two at a time to go figure out > where Zack is. They all show up at Zack's house and one by one > they end up in the mystical world too. So all the characters are > in this cartoon world, but at different places. As they wander > throughout the world, they meet all the cartoon characters from the > shows for that year's lineup. Eventually, all together, they meet > this wizard who eventually transports them back Bayside right > as Belding is saying that if they aren't back by the bell, they will > be in big trouble. They show up and the bell rings and Belding says, > "You were saved by the bell!" That is the general plot as I remember > it, but it only ever aired once. It was about a 2 hour deal. > That's all I can say. My sister and I have searched for any > indication we might be able to see that show again... Episode 10.0 (--): Promotional Episode 09/01/90(?) Meanwhile, the Principals of L.A. are taking a tour of Hawaii and guess who is the tour-leader? Mr. Belding! While in the Hawaii airport, Lisa bets the newly dating Slater and Jessie $50 each that they can't get along without fighting for 2 weeks. Also in the airport, Zack meets a Hawaiian native, Andrea Larson, and he believes it is love at first sight. But her boyfriend, Derek Worthington, picks her up and Zack doesn't think he will see her again. The gang stays at the hotel, "The Hideaway", which Kelly's Granfather, Harry Bannister, owns. The Principals stay at The Royal Pacific. Harry tells the gang that he is probably going to sell to The Royal Pacific for their expansion because they have all but put him out of business. The gang decides to help him by becoming his volunteer staff. They go to the Royal Pacific and make all the Principals mad by posing as Royal staff and giving terrible service. So Belding decides to move the tour to the Hideaway. While they are at the Royal Pacific, Zack sees Andrea again. She is an Activities Director for the hotel, and her boyfriend, Derek, is the son of the owner, Charles Worthington. Harry's lawyer, Brian Hanson, hits on Kelly and they start to get close. He convinces Kelly that selling the Hideaway is in her grandfather's best interest. Meanwhile, some members of the Pupuku tribe kidnap Screech and Lisa. When they get to their village, they tell Screech that he is their new Chief. Apparently, Chief Monaleo told these natives that his descendent would save them, and the statue of Chief Monaleo looks like Screech. The tribe is afraid that the hotel is going to steal their land and build on it, but they have no deed to prove they own the land. Zack and Andrea spend a lot of time together and he is falling for her. She then introduces him to her 6 year old daughter, Jennifer. Zack gets along great with Jennifer and he and Andrea get closer. Kelly (on Brian's advice) convinces her Grandpa to sell. But then Lisa overhears Brian talking to Charles Worthington about a loan extension. Brian is out to hurt Harry by making him lose everything. The gang comes up with a plan. Belding poses as a professor of Polynesian Culture and Zack makes a fake deed to the land for the Pupukus. Brian takes it to Worthington and he burns it, but not before Screech sets up a hidden video in the office. Zack shows the tape to Worthington and he backs down from buying the Hideaway land and taking the Pupuku's land. Andrea quits her job after she hears what jerks Derek and his father are. Kelly punches Brian in the face. It's time for the gang to go. Harry offers Andrea a job as his new manager. The Pupukus become his staff. Zack is heartbroken about leaving Andrea and Jennifer and he tells her he will move to Hawaii. She tells him no, that everything will work out.And of course, Jessie and Slater lost the bet to Lisa and she becomes $100 richer!
