This is the first edition of a file that will be occasionally posted to provide an Episode Guide for the show Hang Time which is part of NBC's children's/teenager's TV line-up, T-NBC. Permission is granted by the author to distribute this file in an UNMODIFIED form to other networks and BB's, etc. Rights to modifications to this file are reserved by the author. Copyright, Ian J. Ball, 1996. 0.1) What is an Episode Guide? What is a FAQ? An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. This episode guides will provide a short synopsis of the plot of each episode, and the guest credits for that episode. A FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) or a FAQL (Frequently Asked Questions List) is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the internet (or to an online service) to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards) to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. 0.2) Where the Author Can Be Reached This is the first edition of this Episode Guide, and it is probably either incorrect in parts or is missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (for private correspondance) ijb@ucla.edu (for emergencies only) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.3) Where Can I Find Copies of this Guide on the 'Net, Either Through FTP or the WWW (the Web)? FTP: As of now, this Episode Guide is available from one FTP site: This site is my own personal folder available in one of AOL's own FTP sites; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found there. (NOTE: Enter the menus as shown when trying to reach this site, as AOL does not allow a "dir" listing of the root directory of that site, as it would contain up to 2.5 million different folders!) (ALSO NOTE: My FAQs/episode guides for Saved by the Bell and California Dreams are available from this same FTP site.): ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/ WWW (the Web): Presently there are two Web sites for Hang Time: The first Web site for HT is my own personal site available from AOL; the most up-to-date version of this Episode Guide, in HTML format, can be found there. (NOTE: As above, my Web sites for the FAQ/episode guides for Saved by the Bell, California Dreams and some other shows are available from this same WWW site.): http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/WWW/HT/Home.html The second site is NBC's own "official Hang Time" Web page, which contains information about the show, cast and crew, and occationally the show's schedule: http://WWW.NBC.COM/entertainment/shows/hang/index.html The third site is the European cable channel Trouble's own "official Hang Time" Web page, which contains information about the show, cast and crew, and occationally the show's schedule: http://www.trouble.co.uk/html/hang_time.htm 0.4) Where to Get More Information on Hang Time For general information, NBC Productions, which produces "Hang Time" (as well as "Saved by the Bell" and "California Dreams") is probably a good place to start: NBC Productions, Inc. 330 Bob Hope Drive Burbank, CA 91523 1.0) HANG TIME 1.1) What is Hang Time? After the success of Saved by the Bell, the original series, NBC wanted to expand its T-NBC Saturday morning line-up. NBC did so in 1992 with the launching of the Peter Engel show "California Dreams" (CD for short). Later, NBC attempted to launched a third comedy in the fall of 1993, "Running the Halls" ("Saved by the Bell-the New Class" (SbtB or SbtB-tNC for short) also debuded this year). It was the first T-NBC comedy not to be produced by Peter Engel of SbtB and California Dreams fame (though its Executive in Charge of Production, as with Saved by the Bell-the New Class, California Dreams and Name Your Adventure, was Gary Considine). Unfortunately for these producers and for NBC, "Running the Halls", while a superior show, did not catch on like CD and SbtB/SbtB-tNC did and it was canceled at the end of the '93-'94 season (see "The Running the Halls FAQ" at http://members.aol.com/IJBall/WWW/RtH/RtH_List.html for more information). In 1995, NBC knew that CD was near the end of its run, and that SbtB-tNC had only two years, at the most, left in its run, so NBC again tried to expand its T-NBC line-up. So Troy Searer, Robert Tarlow and Mark Fink created a show about a high school basketball team set in Indiana. The result was "Hang Time" (HT for short), NBC's second non-Peter Engel produced show, which premiered on September 9, 1995. "Hang Time", together with two viewings of SbtB-tNC and CD, made up the T-NBC line-up for the '95-'96 season (together, this came at the expense of the T-NBC show "Name Your Adventure", which was canceled). Like RtH, "Hang Time" was not produced by Peter Engel and co., but by Executive Producer and Co-Creator Mark Fink (who was with "Full House"). Jeff Ferro ("The Golden Girls") is the co-executive producer. Troy Searer ("Friday Night"), Robert Tarlow ("Running The Halls") and Cindy Begel ("Head Of The Class") are the supervising producers. Roxie Wenk Evans ("Blossom") is the producer; Howard Murray ("Grace Under Fire"), the director. "Hang Time" is from NBC Productions. As with both SbtB/SbtB-tNC and CD, "Hang Time" is set at a public high school, in this case Deering High School. But unlike SbtB and CD, this high school is in the state of Indiana (presumably near Indianapolis). Like CD, most of the gang has a similar activity, though in HT it is the Deering Tornados basketball team (or cheerleading), while in CD it was the gang's band. Also like CD (in seasons #3 and #4), the cast was made up of four boys and three girls, along with the basketball team's Coach, Bill Fuller (played by former NBA Pro, Reggie Theus). HT had two settings though: the high school where the team plays ball and goes to classes, and a mall where most of the gang seems to work after school. HT was renewed for a second season in 1996. However, several cast changes were made which were displeasing to fans of season #1, and the atmosphere of the show was changed to make it more like other Peter Engel T-NBC shows. The show was renewed again for season #3 in 1997. Still more cast changes were made, and the show was now firmly a clone of other Peter Engel T-NBC shows. Hang Time can also be seen in the follwoing foreign nations; only nations and airing times known by the author or listed (if you know others, E-mail me): COUNTRY NETWORK TIMES (and Other Info) ------- ------- ---------------------- Great Britain Trouble 7 days a week(?) Emotions are stirred up for Julie and Chris when he resorts to an old habit to play well in the championship tournament: a good luck kiss from Mary Beth (much to her delight!). Meanwhile, Danny is having a hard time saying the "L" word to Sam. 2.2) The Cast & Episode Guide of Season 2 SEASON 2 For reasons not enitrely clear to me, Mark Fink was removed as Producer of HT before season #2. SbtB & CD Producer Peter Engel has taken over. Many changes have been made to the show to the show in season #2; I have discussed these changes in more detail at my Hang Time web site (http://members.aol.com/IJBall/WWW/HT/HT_article1.html), and have critiqued the changes as well. For the new season, the characters of Chirs, Sam, Earl and Michael were all dropped, and new characters (e.g. Vince, Teddy and Josh) were brought on the show. Julie was paired with newcomer Josh Sanders. Danny's romance with Sam was dropped, and he and Vince and Teddy became HT's equivalent of "California Dream's" Tony and Sly. Amy and Mary Beth were best pals around and spent much of the season either helping, or torturing, Danny, Teddy and Vince. Eventually, in a thoroughly unbelievable development, Mary Beth and Vince became a couple. Hang Time cast: Julie Connor -Daniella Deutscher Danny Mellon -Chad Gabriel Mary Beth Pepperton -Megan Parlen Coach Bill Fuller -Reggie Theus Josh Sanders -Kevin Bell Vince D'Amata -Michael Sullivan Theodore "Teddy" Brodis-Anthony Anderson Amy Wright -Paige Peterson Episode 2.1 (#????): "Winning Isn't Everything" 09/07/96 (2.1) Paul -Josh James (2.1) Molly -Michelle Butler (2.1) Winnie -D.J. So, Julie, Danny and Mary Beth, and newcomers Teddy Brodis (coach Fuller's Godson) and the brash Michael Sullivan, try to recruit talented Josh Sanders, who's sworn off competitive sports. Meanwhile, Mary Beth takes over a Team Manager. NBA All-Star Mitch Richmond has a cameo. Cheerleader Amy Wright is also introduced. Episode 2.2 (#????): "Just One of the Guys" 09/14/96 (2.2) Betty -Jamie Oddan (2.2) Monica -Jennifer Russell and cameo by: (2.2) Florence Griffith- Joyner -as herself Julie has the "hots" for new teammate Josh Sanders, but when Julie comes to think that boys don't notice her because she's too much of a "jock", it causes her such an identity crisis that she quits the team, until a cameo by Florence Griffith-Joyner sets her straight. Meanwhile, when Danny, Teddy and Michael insult the cheerleaders, Mary Beth and Amy punish them by getting all the other girls at Deering to stop talking to them until they apologize. Episode 2.3 (#????): "Harvest Moon" 09/21/96 (2.3) Sheldon -Jeff Payton (2.3) Monica -Jennifer Russell (2.3) Veronica -Brianne Prather (2.3) Nancy -Debbie Entin (2.3) Matt -Brandon Boyt and cameo by: (2.3) Cedrick Ceballos -as himself It's time for the Harvest Moon Dance, and the gang is looking forward to it, especially Danny who will be reunited with Sam, that is, until he gets a "Dear Danny" letter in which Sam tells him that she's found another love. Mary Beth and Vince insult each other over their choices for the dance. Amy tries to convince Teddy to be the DJ for the dance. B-ball player Cedrick Ceballos has a cameo. Episode 2.4 (#????): "The Sure Thing" 09/28/96 (2.4) Tracy -Susan Patterson (2.4) Darla -Tiffani B. Watson (2.4) Maloney -David Clayton Teddy wants to ask a cute girl (Susan Patterson) out, but the size of his "heart" has him too nervous to do it, so the gang tries to help him overcome his fear of asking her out. Meanwhile, Julie's "baby" talk to Josh is driving him nuts! Episode 2.5 (#????): "War of the Rose" 10/05/96 (2.5) Mr. Cheeves -Richard Marion (2.5) Clem Peters -Brien Perry When Mary Beth has the locker room painted a pink color, Vince gets back at her with a nasty note, which causes Mary Beth and Vince to have an escalating war of retaliations. Indeed, they get so out of hand that the gang has to interviene. Meanwhile, Julie tries to avoid having a surprise party for her birthday. Episode 2.6 (#????): "Short Cuts" 10/12/96 (2.6) Jimbo -Christian Hunt and cameo by: (2.6) Muggsy Bogues -as himself Vince is so desparate to get into a basketball training camp hosted by Coach Fuller and NBA star Muggsy Bogues that he'll do anything, including taking steroids. (NOTE: Almost this exact storyline was used in "California Dreams" episode 3.17 (prod #60253).) Meanwhile, the rest of the gang films alien-invasion movie "Zeltoid Hunters" for a class project. Episode 2.7 (#????): "Fake ID-ology" 10/17/96 (2.7) bartender -Frank Lloyd (2.7) Bob -Bodhi Elfman (2.7) bouncer #1 (reads "The Gulag Archipelago" -Don Dowe (2.7) bouncer #2 (reads Shakespeare) -Lawrence McNeal III (2.7) Duke -Charles Chisham (2.7) Pauly -Christopher Maleki (2.7) bar guy #1 -Michael B. Episode 2.8 (#????): "When Loss Is Gain" 10/25/96 (2.8) Grandma Sanders -Nora Meerbaum (2.8) Susan -Lizette Carbion (2.8) Theresa -Martha V. Romo (2.8) George -Johnny Dark (2.8) Annabella -Jamie Music (2.8) Rudy -Mel Herst The gang each sacriice an important personal item for a charity drive, but when Mary Beth gets mugged for her efforts, her (somewhat justifiably) uncharatable comments cause Josh to go ballistic. Episode 2.9 (#????): "Style Before Substance" 11/02/96 (2.9) John Kent -Steven Meek (2.9) Martha -Linda Porter (2.9) Gertrude -Patricia Palce (2.9) Willie -Billy Dee Willis (2.9) Clem -Brian Perry (2.9) Bull -Davee Youngblood Amy supports mayoral candidate John Kent because of his looks alone, but Danny warns her that she should determine his positions on the issues before supporting him. Meanwhile the basketball team challanges the football team to various competitions when the footballers acuse the b-ballers of being wimps. Brennan (2.10) Mrs. Pepperton -Lucy Butler and cameo by: (2.10) Juwan Howard -as himself When Mary Beth begins to resent the fact that her father is not spending enough time with her, she starts dating Vince to get his attention, but the plan backfires when Vince begins to fall for her. Hall When Teddy's dad, NBA superstar Theodore "Superman" Brodis, Sr. (real-life former NBA player, Marques Johnson), moves to Indianapolis after retiring from the NBA, Teddy has high hopes that he and his dad will finally be a family, but his dad's criticisms soon enfuriate Teddy. Meanwhile, the team gets ready for a 3-point shoot-off. Episode 2.12 (#????): "Green-Eyed Julie" 11/23/96 [not aired on West Coast on this date] (2.12) Nicole -Shannon Elizabeth (2.12) Tracey -Susan Patterson (2.12) Kim -Maggie Lawson (2.12) Hugh -David Chotiner Julie gets jealous of pretty new waitress Nicole (Shannon Elizabeth), who works at the Stadium for Josh. But it turns out Julie's jealousy my not be unfounded, as Nicole may indeed have designs on Josh. So Josh tries to set Nicole up with Danny. Meanwhile, Mary Beth tries to teach Vince how to dance, with painful results. Episode 2.13 (#????): "The Best Game of the Season" 11/30/96 (2.13) Mario Lafaucci -Don Mardini and cameo by: (2.13) Lisa Leslie -as herself Just before the last regular game of the season, the one which will decide if Deering gets a spot in the play-offs, Julie is made an incredible offer: the chance to play pro-ball in Italy, forcing Julie to decide between playing pro in Italy and finishing out school. Aside from making the "All Rookie First Team," Theus was also runner-up for "Rookie of the Year". After six years with the Bulls, he joined the Kings, first in Kansas City, then in Sacramento. After five years there, he spent one season each with Atlanta, Orlando and New Jersey. In his 14-year NBA career, Theus was a two-time NBA All-Star and one of only six players in NBA history to score over 19,000 points and have over 6,000 assists.
