1.1: Pilot

Jacqueline "Jack" Barrett discovers that the man (Vincent Ventresca) she is about to marry has been unfaithful to her, and she flees to New York City to live with an old High School friend Audrey Griffin and "find herself". Soon enough, Jack's Mother (Victoria Principal) and Father (Kip Gilman) show up to try to get her to change her mind. Also once in NYC, Jack has a "meet cute" with Audrey's neighbor, David "Jill" Jillefsky, a toymaker, who lives with pre-med Barthlomew "Barto" Zane (along with frequent visitor, bartender friend Michael "Mikey" Russo). Soon enough, sparks fly between "Jack" and "Jill". The problem: Jill is about to move in with his long-time TV reporter girlfriend, Elisa Cronkite. Eddie Naiman: Gary Marks.

1.2: "The Awful Truth"

Jack's erstwhile ex-fiance, Danny Hallahan (Vincent Ventresca), chases her to New York to beg her for her forgiveness. But Jill, in a bout of protectiveness (and jealousy) tells Danny a lie to prevent their reconciliation. Elisa gets Jack an intern job at the TV station. Jill moves out of Barto's, and into Elisa's, while, at the same time, he loses an important toy prototype that he must get back from Mikey on a deadline, or risk losing his job. Meanwhile, Mikey assumes that he's welcome at Barto's and moves in, while Barto, in fact, does *not* want Mikey to move in but doesn't have the heart to tell him. Eddie Naiman: Gary Marks. Mrs. Cecelia Barrett: Victoria Principal.

1.3: "Moving On"

Audrey tells Jack to have a "meaningless fling" to get over her recent break-up with Danny, which Jack attempts to do at a party that Barto throws. Meanwhile, both Jill and Elisa are reeling from their break-up, which leads to jealousy of Jack's actions from Jill, and a comforting ear from Mikey for Elisa. Barto uses his party as a chance to get closer to Audrey.

1.4: "Welcome to the Working Week"

The kindly, elderly owner of the toy company (Bill Macy) promotes Jill, but he dies before it is made official. Meanwhile, Jack is assigned by her boss at the TV station, Eddie Naiman (Gary Marks), to investigate safety code violations at restaurants. Audrey considers "trading up" on boyfriends for cynical, career-based reasons (i.e. to date an important stage director (Timothy Omundson)). Mikey despairs that he has no career goals, and thus no real future.

1.5: "Not Just a River in Egypt"

Jill unexpectly runs across his beautify high school crush, Laurie Tindell (Monet Mazur), and he starts seeing her. Meanwhile, Jack and Elisa's friendship becomes strained after Elisa begins to suspect that Jack is not being totally honest about her feelings for Jill. Barto scores points with Audrey when she gets panic-stricken over her big starring role which requires her to sing, something she feels she can't do. Travis: Timothy Omundson. Eddie Naiman: Gary Marks.

1.6: "She Ain't Heavy"

Jill's free-spirited and wild, high school-aged sister, Abby (Virginya Keehne), visits Jill, but Jill is appalled at just how free-spirited an wild his "little" sister has become. Meanwhile, Barto and Audrey finally get together, when Travis (Timothy Omundson) once again treats Audrey like dirt, but Barto's disappointed with her cavalier response. Meanwhile, Elisa has a "moment" with a stranger (Chad Willett) on the street. Eddie Naiman: Gary Marks.

1.7: "Fear and Loathing in Gotham"

Jill finally decides to officially ask Jack out, but she's working hard for new 'star' reporter, Matt Prophet (Josh Hopkins), and the result of Jack's new dedication to her job is that she keeps missing dates with Jill. Barto has fallen so head-over-heels for Audrey that his grades are plummeting, and he's obsessed with telling her how deeply he really feels with her, if he can find the right time! Eddie Naiman: Gary Marks. Travis: Timothy Omundson.

1.8: "Men Will Be Boys"

When a coworker (Sean O'Bryan) at the toy company takes credit for one of his ideas, Jill challenges him to a boxing match at a new club where public boxing challenges take place. And when Matt (Josh Hopkins) hears about it, he decides to make it a story at the TV station, much to Jack's chagrin. Elisa sees her "romantic stranger" (Chad Willett) at the boxing cub. Eddie Naiman: Gary Marks.

1.9: "Pseudos, Sex and Sidebars"

Jack is sued by Laurie's (see episode 1.5) husband for breaking up his marriage, where he is savaged in court by an extremely cute lawyer (Lori Rom) (and where his case is *not* helped by witness Mikey!). Meanwhile, Jill plans insinuations in Jack's head that Matt (Josh Hopkins) is a real "ladies man", who maybe isn't being exclusive with Jack. Elisa searches for her "romantic stranger" (Chad Willett). Mikey is promoted to bar manager, and then is ordered by his boss (John Pyper-Ferguson) to fire a cute, but ditzy, waitress named Belinda (Caryn Greenhut). Audrey becomes jealous when Barto starts spending a lot of study time with a another female medical student, and struggles with her growing feelings for Barto.

1.10: "To Be Perfectly Honest"

Jill's suspicions are aroused when he sees Matt (Josh Hopkins) with another woman, and he struggles whether he should interfere and tell Jack, or stay out of it. Meanwhile, Jill's tactless new girlfriend, Allison Hanau (Lori Rom) offends Mikey (and nearly everyone else!). Elisa inadvertently sees her boss, Eddie Naiman (Gary Marks), naked, causing all sorts of problems; she also glimpses her "stranger" (Chad Willett) again . Audrey becomes intimidated by Barto's medical expertise, and her relative lack of education, fearing it will eventually doom their newly inaugurated relationship.

1.11: "Bad Timing and Dirty Laundry"

Jack and Jill get trapped in the laundry room together, causing them to miss their dates with Matt (Josh Hopkins) and Allison (Lori Rom), respectively. Making their relationship pretty "official", Audrey manages to finagle an invitation to Barto's parents (Jessica Walter, Stephen Macht), but Barto is resistant knowing that his parents are hopeless, upper-crust snobs. Elisa and her "romantic stranger", Jonathon Appel (Chad Willett), finally get together.

1.12: "When You Wish Upon a Car"

Elisa finds an apparent love letter (not to her!) in Jonathon's (Chad Willett) appartment, and begins to suspect that she may be the "other woman". At the toy company, Jill's long-standing dream project is finally taking off, but the creative compromises he's being forced to make in it start to eat away at him, even if his reservations don't trouble Allison (Lori Rom), who thinks Jill should swallow his concerns to maximize his money/career potential. And a mysterious ice cream man gives Jill a prophecy. Meanwhile, money problems force Jack to take a second job at the @ Bar working for Mikey, and Jack is *not* a good waitress! Matt Prophet: Josh Hopkins.

1.13: "Animal Planet (Part 1)"

Jack's relationship with Matt (Josh Hopkins), and her emotions, are thrown into chaos by two events: Jill's stunning declaration of his love for Jack at the end of "When You Wish Upon a Car" (episode 1.12), and Matt's declaration that he has been offered a job in Washington, DC and has managed to get her an interview too! Mikey crosses paths with Belinda (Caryn Greenhut), and immediately finds himself in a relationship with her, as he tries to prove to others that he can handle a "committed" relationship. The problem? Mikey finds himself much more attracted to Belinda's roommate, Lucy (Angela Featherstone). Elisa and Jonathon (Chad Willett) clash over issues dealing with his late wife.

1.14: "Animal Planet (Part 2)"

Jack is forced to choose between going to Washington, DC with Matt (Josh Hopkins), or stay and pursue her relationship with Jill. Elisa swears to Jonathon (Chad Willett) that she doesn't want anything for Valentine's Day. Audrey injures her leg, and Barto tries to be supportive. Mikey tries to continue his relationship with Belinda (Caryn Greenhut), despite his growing attraction to roommate Lucy (Angela Featherstone).

1.15: "The !@#$%*& Future"

Jack and Jill become annoyed with each other because of what they are telling Audrey and Barto, respectively, about their relationship, while Jack resents Elisa's continual reminiscing about Jill's habits when Jill and Elisa were still dating. Mikey has fallen hard for Lucy (Angela Featherstone), so much so that he decides to move out of his parents and get his own place, but Lucy's not nearly as serious about the relationship as he is.

1.16: "Under Pressure"

Jack and Jill suffer under the pressure of telling the other "I love you" when Jill says it to Jack, but Jack doesn't respond. Mikey has problems with new roommate Elisa getting so chummy with Mikey's new date (Elizabeth Berkley). Audrey wonders if the "heat" is out of her relationship with Barto, as he's preferring sleep to sex.

1.17: "Lovers and Other Strangers"

Barto begins to hallucinate that his med school cadaver (Tom Bosley) is speaking to him and giving him advice, after Barto fails to save a heart attack victim who falls dead on the street. Jill asks Jack to pose nude for his photography assignment (his new career goal, now that toy making is kaput), and, to Jill's surprise, Jack agrees! Jonathon (Chad Willett) becomes jealous of Elisa's cohabitation with Mikey, endangering their relationship.

1.18: "A Key Exchange"

Jack and Jill exchange apartment keys, and it's not long before Barto catches Jack reading through Jill's journal. Indeed, an entry in Jill's journal, about an old flame named Becky Hart, disturbs Jack. Audrey's agent (Randy Becker) has gotten her considered for a Hollywood movie role, and Barto is really cracking down for finals with a pretty fellow med student named Annie (Elisa Donavan), and both circumstances put a strain on Audrey's and Barto's relationship. Elisa and Mikey complain about each other's roommate 'habits' to their friends, as Belinda (Caryn Greenhut) is hired as their "maid".

1.19: "Starstruck"

Audrey's agent, Dan (Randy Becker) continues to stoke her interest in Hollywood, and a fateful decision by Barto to sleep with Annie (Elisa Donavan) ends their relationship, and pushes Audrey irreperably in that direction. Meanwhile, Jack & Jill wrestle with the option of moving in together. And Mikey manages to start dating famous movie star Paris Everett (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), but Mikey's calculated restraint in the relationship causes Paris to become more interested in hanging around with her faithful fan Elisa.
