It's a new school year at Deering High and the basketball season begins with a shaky start, with the departure of Michael Maxwell, and seniors Earl Hatfield and Chris Atwater (and Team Manager Sam, who's in college in Chicago). So, Julie, Danny and Mary Beth, and newcomers Teddy Brodis (coach Fuller's Godson) and the brash Michael Sullivan, try to recruit talented Josh Sanders, who's sworn off competitive sports. Meanwhile, Mary Beth takes over a Team Manager. NBA All-Star Mitch Richmond has a cameo. Cheerleader Amy Wright is also introduced.

Julie has the "hots" for new teammate Josh Sanders, but when Julie comes to think that boys don't notice her because she's too much of a "jock", it causes her such an identity crisis that she quits the team, until a cameo by Florence Griffith-Joyner sets her straight. Meanwhile, when Danny, Teddy and Michael insult the cheerleaders, Mary Beth and Amy punish them by getting all the other girls at Deering to stop talking to them until they apologize.

It's time for the Harvest Moon Dance, and the gang is looking forward to it, especially Danny who will be reunited with Sam, that is, until he gets a "Dear Danny" letter in which Sam tells him that she's found another love. Mary Beth and Vince insult each other over their choices for the dance. Amy tries to convince Teddy to be the DJ for the dance. B-ball player Cedrick Ceballos has a cameo.

2.4: "The Sure Thing"

Teddy wants to ask a cute girl (Susan Patterson) out, but the size of his "heart" has him too nervous to do it, so the gang tries to help him overcome his fear of asking her out. Meanwhile, Julie's "baby" talk to Josh is driving him nuts!

When Mary Beth has the locker room painted a pink color, Vince gets back at her with a nasty note, which leads Mary Beth and Vince to take part in an escalating war of retaliations against each other. Indeed, they get so out of hand that the gang has to interviene. Meanwhile, Julie tries to avoid having a surprise party for her birthday.

2.6: "Short Cuts"

Vince is so desparate to get into a basketball training camp hosted by Coach Fuller and NBA star Muggsy Bogues that he'll do anything, including taking steroids. (NOTE: Almost this exact storyline was used in "California Dreams" episode 3.17 (prod #60253).) Meanwhile, the rest of the gang films alien-invasion movie "Zeltoid Hunters" for a class project.

As we start, the gang has all been benched by Coach Fuller, and, in flashback, we soon find out the reason: the gang had obtained some fake I.D.'s to get into an over-21 club to see a band, and, while there, Josh, Mary Beth and Amy had gotten into some alcohol, while Vince had gotten into a fight.

The gang each sacriice an important personal item for a charity drive, but when Mary Beth gets mugged for her efforts, her (somewhat justifiably) uncharatable comments cause Josh to go ballistic.

Amy supports mayoral candidate John Kent because of his looks alone, but Danny warns her that she should determine his positions on the issues before supporting him. Meanwhile the basketball team challanges the football team to various competitions when the footballers acuse the b-ballers of being wimps.

When Mary Beth begins to resent the fact that her father is not spending enough time with her, she starts dating Vince to get his attention, but the plan backfires when Vince begins to fall for her. Meanwhile, the team is pysched out when they have to play (and beat) undefeated Remington High to get into the play-offs.

When Teddy's dad, NBA superstar Theodore "Superman" Brodis, Sr. (real-life former NBA player, Marques Johnson), moves to Indianapolis after retiring from the NBA, Teddy has high hopes that he and his dad will finally be a family, but his dad's criticisms soon enfuriate Teddy. Meanwhile, the team gets ready for a 3-point shoot-off.

Julie gets jealous of pretty new waitress Nicole (Shannon Elizabeth), who works at the Stadium for Josh. But it turns out Julie's jealousy my not be unfounded, as Nicole may indeed have designs on Josh. So Josh tries to set Nicole up with Danny. Meanwhile, Mary Beth tries to teach Vince how to dance, with painful results.

2.13: "The Best Game of the Season"

Just before the last regular game of the season, the one which will decide if Deering gets a spot in the play-offs, Julie is made an incredible offer: the chance to play pro-ball in Italy, forcing Julie to decide between playing pro in Italy and finishing out school. [Note: Nice touch on the ending of this episode!]
