昨日同僚のアメリカ人女性から、「学会で、flag bearer してみたい？」といきなり聞かれて、bearer が分からず困惑。「Flag carrier の事。」と言い直してくれて、bearer が運搬人の事だと分かりました。bear は「（重さに耐えて）～を運ぶ」という意味なので、flag は重いのでしょうね〜。14日からの学会は国際学会なので、各国から研究者が集まります。開会式 (?) で各国の flag を会場に運び飾る人をどうやら探しているようです。そういうイベントに参加するとお友達が増えるのでやってみたい気もしないではないのですが、科学の世界に国を持ち込むのはなんか違和感も感じます。「Flag bearers will meet on Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 6:15 a.m. in Hall B of the Los Angeles Convention Center -- breakfast and lots of coffee will be served while flags are being distributed and organized. The flag parade will begin at 7:30 p.m. from Hall B into Hall A,. The flags will be placed at the front of the Hall, where they will remain throughout the meeting.」だそうです。また「As a token of our appreciation for participation in the event, flag bearers will receive a complimentary drink ticket to be used at the Opening Reception and a voucher that may be redeemed for a complimentary ticket to the Centennial Concert featuring k.d. lang and Mandy Patinkin. 」だそうです。日本国旗を運ぶ人はまだ決まっていないようです。やってみたい方がいらっしゃったら、御連絡下さい。
