devastate [動] 《受動態で》大打撃を受ける、立ち直れないほどのショックを受ける
devastating [形] 壊滅的な、荒廃させる、（影響が）計り知れない、痛烈な、熾烈な、衝撃的な
新年早々にあった研究室のリーダー(principle investigator, PI) 達が集まる PI retreat で、突然一人の研究者が亡くなりました。みんな衝撃を受けています。今日その出来事についてのメールを私の働いている研究所（NCI, NIH) のdirectorから受け取りました。「We began the first full week of 2007 with a seemingly nonstop round of very important and productive meetings that I believe set the tone for a challenging and exciting New Year. Sadly, these very positive activities were darkened by the death of our beloved colleague Dr. Christopher J. Michejda whose sudden passing at the Intramural Scientific Retreat on January 9 has been devastating（衝撃的な） to all of us. I want to personally thank the NCI physician-scientists and others who tried valiantly (果敢に) to save his life. We will miss Chris greatly.」

亡くなった Dr. Christopher J. Michejdaは化学発癌や抗がん剤の研究の世界ではとても有名な方だそうです。御冥福をお祈り致します。
