Sat - November 3, 2007THE BLOG HAS MOVEDThere will be no more entries posted here, please
change your bookmark to http://sommerville.info or http://web.mac.com/iain_sommerville/
(the latter is faster though may change in forthcoming years).
Click here for the new RSS feed. Posted at 11:21 AM Wed - October 17, 2007Blog will be moving.....I have been publishing this using iblog for over 3
years, in which time the software has barely been updated and offers little
support for features that have been in Mac OSX for a couple of years (they have
been promising an update for almost a year now). In the next few weeks I will
moving the blog over to iWeb '08 (aka 2.0.2), which I have been using to
publish the rest of my site for a year or two. There are pros and cons of both
however it will be easier to have everything in a single application as it can
take care of links between different parts of the site automatically. Here is a preview of the format - I would welcome comments on the layout and
how it renders on different machines. The main drawback of this style (the iWeb
'darkroom' theme) is that hyperlinks are not underlined - they are just a
lighter shade of grey.
Apologies for the recent lack of updates which is due to a combination of caulking and lack of high speed internet access. Posted at 11:34 AM Sat - August 11, 2007Upgrade to iLife '08All this site (other than this page which
currently uses iBlog
1.0) is created using iWeb part of the apple iLife suite. After 18
months, the update to iLife was announced by the real Steve
Jobs on Tuesday. Fortunately this occurred after meeting Lutz in DC so
we picked up a copy on the way back to the boat (not bad value - $100 for a
family pack we can install on 3 computers) and installed it. The only
applications I have used, iPhoto and iWeb have had some pretty neat
upgrades.
iPhoto has greatly improved the ease of picture management, replacing film rolls with events and has much better image correction tools. It has also introduced a way of directly hosting images on the web with an interesting user interface (mimicking the events display) that also allows image uploading via email and the iPhone. Click here to see a couple of my albums displayed this way. Unfortunately it doesn't allow the addition of any comment text for albums or copyright info so, for now, I am still publishing pictures via iWeb. iWeb on the surface didn't appear to have many new features, however they have greatly improved the handling of large sites such as this. Startup time is now under 5 seconds (a great improvement) and it no longer starts from scratch when uploads fail (which was a very frustrating problem on many Central American internet links). The page layouts are now more flexible which has allowed me to improve the layout of all the photo albums I have published (increasing the size and page area used for the photos) and there are now options for commenting on any photos and downloading decent resolution versions of the pictures. Try any of the photo albums (click on a photo and the "Play Slideshow" link to see the new options). The other enhancements are pretty minor and include the ability to add google maps to pages or blog entries like this (though you have to be online to do this - tricky on a boat). Of course the URLs of just about every page changed so lots of manual relinking to do from this page (I think I will migrate from iBlog to iWeb for this page in the next month or so to get round that problem). I also bought a copy of iWork '08 (the first time I have tried it). This is their office suite and again only cost $100 for 3 computers (my macbook, Ruth's macbook and the imac back in the condo) - a lot cheaper than office. So far I have only tried the spreadsheet 'numbers' and it is pretty impressive for a version 1.0. It is missing some functions I like in Excel (external cell referencing formulae for conditional formating and some table functions etc), however it's structure using a number of distinct tables on a worksheet instead of a giant grid is a much better way to go..... (not that I need much in the way of complex spreadsheets these days - the provisioning list is pretty simple!). Back to the boat..... I have just removed and re-bedded 3 stanchions in an attempt to stop a water leak and have started the process of recaulking much of the teak deck (it is getting soft in patches) - this will be a horrible job. It is Ruth's 25th high school reunion this afternoon which is an excuse to down tools. ![]() Posted at 09:06 AM Mon - March 5, 2007Update on reader surveyThe reader survey caused a flurry of email, here
are some additions:
- Gary, I completely forgot to include, Gary - occupation Retired. Another Malö owner - Alan and family are apparently a regular reader. Occupation - Idol [sic] Musician. Follows progress on his [world map] shower curtain - Mike, an ex-collegue of mine who consults in or around London somewhere. Wow - more people than I thought with spare time.... Posted at 06:48 PM Sat - March 3, 2007Reader SurveyWe are constantly amazed that people have the
spare time to regularly check out the blog/boat site so we decided to do a bit
of a survey of who had the spare time to read it. This is based on who posted
comments and emailed us about entries. So here is the
list:
- Ruth's Father and my Father. Our most faithful site monitors; regularly checking the boat tracker to make sure we aren't lost. Occupation - Retired - Ruth's friend Maude. Occupation - Mom - Jeff. Occupation - In-between jobs (though according to his blog , he is now employed - congratulations) - Tom Keffer. Occupation - Retired - Todd. Occupation - Government Contractor (obviously plenty of spare time) - Lutz. Occupation - works for the phone company (nuff said) So there is a snapshot of our audience...... Posted at 08:34 AM Wed - August 30, 2006Site updated againI have moved a bunch of pages over to the iweb
part of the site, hopefully I have moved all the links correctly (all the broken
links I could find were to the lutzlodge); all the sailing trip blog entries
have been moved from here to 2006
Puget Sound
. We are still in Morro Bay as the winds off Point Conception have
given us an excuse to hang out for a little longer. We really like the town and
yacht club; very laid back and friendly. Our plan is to leave the boat in
Ventura around Sept 11th, fly to Turkey from Atlanta on Sept 15th and be in the
UK for a week or so from October 5th; get in touch if you will be
around.
At Michael's request, BFTP has been updated with some pictures of Cotswold Gardens :) Posted at 03:13 PM Tue - March 21, 2006Turkey House PlansA few people had asked to see our plans for
building the house in Turkey. The current plans are here (pdf file, right click and download). The
first page has the cottage and the second the main building. The idea is for
them to be side by side a few yards (meters) apart looking down the hill and
slightly down the valley. When I have time I will create a micro site showing
the land layout etc. The land is in Bodrum Peninsula around 15-20 minutes drive
from the sea. See pictures in Bodrum in spring (the ones starting with Kitfarm are on and
around the land)
Posted at 10:20 PM Wed - January 25, 2006iLife6, AJAX and PhotocastingAnother year, another version of ILife courtesy
of the latest Stevathon. iPhoto 6 is a pretty good
update with better handling of 1,000s of photos (we need to get John to really
test it though) and a very nice full screen edit with picture comparisons. Very
stable so far. iMovie and iDVD
look to have a number of very nice features though haven't used them. Garageband, however is unchanged other than,
albeit fairly comprehensive, support of podcasting (something I never intend to use).
iWeb is a bit of an oddity, an easy to use web page editor tied to templates,
appears to work well until you do something different to the supplied templates.
Hopefully it will improve. It can, however upload albums that can be accessed
via an AJAX client. Try out the (much updated)
slideshow from the 2005 xmas in Belize and let mw know how it works. This page was
created in iWeb, click the start slideshow button to try out the improved slideshow.
I have also published the same album as a 'photocast', Apple's attempt to bring RSS to photo albums. Click Here to subscribe to the RSS feed - I have heard this doesn't work with all RSS clients so this is only a test..... Posted at 06:46 PM |
