This is my first week on my new job as teacher. The amount of work to do and things to learn is just about as much as I can handle. My current goal is to be able to eat lunch, to eat lunch without having to work through it, and to get more than four hours of sleep a night. Each day is a little better than the previous, so I'll get Gedanken back to a working pace in a few weeks.

In the meantime, you can kick back and relax. On the weekend I will post what's behind door number 5, where you get to meet Clarus.

Have fun,

That's more like three goals.... Are you sure you're teaching math? :) Well, like my prof once said (in her own defense), "Math isn't just about numbers, you know!"

Take your time with Gedanken. I'm enjoying the pace and the plot, and can't wait to meet Clarus.

Subject: Gedanken: node 5 - Clarus the dogcow

[[Gedanken GM]]
Nitro looks around for a big box, but seeing none agrees to try door #5. After closing the red door, the scene changes to pasture. The door behind is blue, with a figure that seems to indicate rolling dunes. It has the number 3 on it. The door itself has changed into a wooden cow gate, being part of a fence enclosing the rectangular pasture. There are no other doors or gates to be found. The pasture is around 75 strides square.

In the middle of the pasture is an apple tree. Below it is a small animal, frolicking around and playing with a small red object. At first the creature seems to be a dog, then it seems to be a cow. It is white with cow spots, has cow ears, a dog snout and tail, and hooves. It is about half Nitro's height. As the group approaches, you find that the object the dogcow is playing with is a red token, albeit a slobbery one. When you get close, it marks out a Moof! and runs away to the far side of the pasture.

What do you do? You may use any of your abilities/skills in any creative way you think of. You will find another invisible wall about ten feet outside of the fence. To catch up to the animal requires you pass a Level II saving roll on speed.

[[ooc]]
I will post a picture of Clarus in the photos section in a few moments.

Nitro will go over to the tree. If the beast left the red token behind, heíll pick it up.
If not, heíll eat an apple from the tree.

Sorry I haven't posted recently. Life is rearing its ugly head again (despite how many times I club it into submission).

Nitro tells Ryone to stand on his head and quack like a duck.

Well, it'd have worked if Ryone knew how to speak common...

Okay, Talan_Fire. I understand. I really really understand. I would stop Gedanken myself if the time were the only thing that mattered, but staying in the game does me more good than the little time it takes. I'm not keeping up the archives, though—that does take too much time. The data is on my hard drive and I can do it later when I get a program to do the work for me.

[[Gedanken GM]] Nitro finds the apple to be sweet and delicious. It is of the Macintosh variety. There are only a few apples left on the tree--most of the others have already fallen and rotted away.

The dogcow ran away with the token in its mouth, and is now gnawing on it in the corner of the pasture while keeping a wary eye on the Black Hands.

[[OOC]] L2 SR vs. Speed(10): 5+1 + 10 = 16 < 25 (fail)

[[Paddy]] raises a bushy eyebrow at the dog who would be a cow (or vice versa) and plops his make-shift buckler down near the door. He then tries chasing the moo-pooch around the tree to no avail, and finally gives up as it settles on the far side of the pasture to chew on the token. He stoops by the tree, hands on knees to catch his breath. "Spritely wee thing, eh Nitro?" Paddy watches the Warrior closely after he takes a few bites of the apple, then he climbs up the tree to get an apple for himself.

From his vantage point, he can see Wendy attempting to coax the token from the strange creature. It is at this point that Paddy realizes he might be able to converse with the being, given his talent in cow-whispering. So he wriggles down the tree (apple in mouth, if he can get to one), and makes his way slowly toward Wendy and the dogcow. "Any luck, Lassie? Oh, here is your dagger. Thank you kindly," he says, handing back her blade.

If Wendy does not succeed in obtaining the token, Paddy offers to "chat" with it, offering the traditional Bovine greeting (which translates roughly, "Yo, how's the cud?"). If there is still no response, he holds out his apple for it to sniff.

Calenril_i

Subject: Gedanken: Node 5, Clarus

[[ooc]] Clarus is a dogcow, not a dogbull.

[[Gedanken GM]]
As Wendy gets close to the wary animal, she sees the little udders and realizes her mistake. This throws her off just a bit and she hesitates just for a moment. The dogcow picks up the negative vibrations of her uncertainty, growling out a low "Mrrr."

[[ooc]] If Wendy makes a 3rd-level SR on Chr, the dogcow lets her approach. That "here boy" mistake pushed it from 2nd to 3rd level. If she doesn't make it, then the dogcow runs off again and Paddy gets to try.

Paddy knows bovine, not canine. Clarus speaks a combination of the languages, so Paddy may make things worse with his cow talk. This is going to take brains, luck, and charisma. Jaxdracon, try a 1st-level roll on IQ, then a roll on LK and a roll on CHR. The required levels for the LK and CHR depend on the previous rolls.

Nitro will wait to see if they succeed.
If not, he will run over to it. (Rolled 6+4=10, and with his speed that will make the 2nd level save I think was required.)
As mentioned, if they havenít succeeded, he smacks the dogcow in the snout.
Hopefully itíll try to bite him- tereby dropping the token. Iím gambling Nitroís armor will protect him. If not, oh wellÖ

[[Gedanken GM]] Paddy knows that his knowledge of Bovine communication will only help partially, since this is not a true cow. With his brains and some luck, he still manages to get the idea across to Clarus--he means no harm, he wants to get close, etc. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to put enough charm in it. Clarus takes off running, slobbery token in mouth.

It's Nitro's turn, now. ...

Nitro attempts to catch up to Clarus, but his heavy armor slows him too much. ...

[[ooc]] If Nitro loses his armor for the chase, he'll catch up to Clarus. Just a teensy little L1 DEX saving throw should be enough to hit that snout, even with the two of you galloping around.

P.S., Charlie should check the contents of her pack.

Subject: Re: Gedanken: clarus

[[ooc]] If Nitro loses his armor for the chase, he'll catch up to Clarus. Just a teensy little L1 DEX saving throw should be enough to hit that snout, even with the two of you galloping around

Forget it. I'd be dead if I didn't have the armor. I'll throw apples at it instead.

Calenril_i

Subject: Gedanken: sticks and stones

[[Gedanken GM]] Nitro throws things at Clarus, who takes up a run into the corner of her pasture.

Charlie watches the calf-sized dogcow as it runs about, thinking it would be much easier to catch if it were a fish. This reminds her of a hook and line. A few moments later, she has pulled out her rope from her pack, hoping that it might help.

[[ooc]] Charlie is supposedly very impulsive. It would be in character for her to try to tackle the dogcow and tie it up. But that would be up to Gerbica...

-Paddy might be able to try talking again. He has the communication down, so only a CHR saving roll would be needed, though now it would have be L3. It would still be L3 CHR roll for Wendy to try.
-The others may continue to try to catch Clarus, with a L2 SR on speed required. Once you catch her, you may tackle her or use another strategy such as Nitro's. You will have to be sure you are carrying less than half your max weight, so if you have heavy armor you'll have to shed it.
-Each attempt takes a combat round or two. You may keep trying as long as you want, though time is ticking. 5 rounds is a turn, and a turn is ten minutes. You've been in the pasture for about 1 turn. There are around 36 turns left until sundown, and you only have 1 red token.
-After eating and tossing around apples, there are just two nice red ripe ones left on the tree.

Eickeric

Subject: Gedanken: sticks and stones

As mentioned, Nitro is not going to drop the armor, so chasing it is out.

Paddy can try talking to it again, or Charlie can use the rope, or Wendy can do whatever it is hobbits do. Nitro will recover the other two apples and wait for the others to finish what they were doing. If nobody is successful, after he gets the apples, he'll look around for a decently-sized rock.

Not so, Nitro took the last two apples from the tree in post #3099. Paddy would have been offering the apple he picked in post #2970. I don't really care though, I think I was just going to throw it at the cow anyway.

>This time, he manages to persuade her to let go of the token. Paddy picks up the slobbery red token

Well, he certainly can't keep it.
We all saw what happened the last time he had one.

>and the dogcow takes a bite of the red apple. At the first bite, the apple glows, changing colors in bands of purple, blue, red, orange, yellow, and green, then it transforms into a red token. The dogcow drops it, sniffs it, then kneels down and starts gnawing on it.

Due to the cow or the apple?

>The team now has two red tokens and several blue tokens. There is one ripe apple left on the tree,

It seems you skipped post #3099 entirely.
Thanks loads.

>and the dogcow has one more token.

I think Nitro is looking for a big rock.
(About fist size.)

>What do you do? Options are same as before. Time is moving on.

Well, gee, if you actually read the posts you'd know! ;P

>[ooc] Persuading Clarus to trade for an apple is no easier, because she only git one bite before the apple changed into a token. As I recall, if you chase her, it'll take a L2 Spd SR.

I made that once, but you said I'd need to drop the armor.
Nuts to that.

>To charm her takes a L3 SR. Plus there are several other options.

That's why I'm looking for a big rock.
(Frankly, we ought to either just kill the thing or move on. We've already been told (and seen) that these things are just creations anyway, so PETA isn't likely to come hunting us.)

Calenril_i

Subject: Re: Gedanken: sticks and stones

[[ooc]] I stand corrected. I had been thinking of the earlier post where Nitro was throwing apples. Post #3099 did indeed state that Nitro took the last two. The one Paddy just used was the one he carried from his first attempt. So, there are two fresh apples left, not just one.

Cows are miserable creatures, and it's a well-known fact that dogs are evil. We'd be doing the world a service.

Forget it though. We've tried chasing it, talking to it, trading it, and throwing things at it. Nitro decides we've wasted too much time on this thing. He leaves through whatever door is closest. The others can follow or continue to deal with the dogcow if they think it'll do them any good.

[[OOC]] OK, let's get some Gedanken going....

[[Paddy]] doesn't think his errant lucky streak will last long enough to charm Clarus twice, but he would sure like to redeem himself after losing their first red token, by getting two here.

As Nitro exits stage left, Paddy takes out a blue stone, hefts it in his hand and holds it up for the dogcow to see as he approaches Clarus slowly---just close enough to get her attention. If she seems interested in the crystalline stone, he'll try to distract her with it (by lobbing it close by her) so somebody can grab the disc.

Otherwise, if Clarus pays no heed to Paddy, and Paddy gets a REAL good feeling about the stone, he'll try slinging the stone at the disk to scare Clarus away.

As he focuses on the disk, he feels a connection to the stone, sensing its momentum and location (even at is whirls around), exactly. He prepares to release the stone with an extra surety of aim but he also realizes that if he misses just by the length of his arm, he could kill her.

[[ooc]]
Paddy may attempt the shot anyway, or just leave. When Paddy leaves, the rest are waiting, too. When the whole group has passed through the pasture gate, they are back in the previous node in the desert--node 3.

[[Paddy]] Factoring in his confidence with the crystalline stone, his desire to make up for losing the first red disk, the position of the sun in the sky, and his potentially precarious pecuniary position if they fail to earn the reward money, Paddy weighs the consequences of accidentally killing the innocent dogcow vs. the advantages of gaining another red disk. It is a tough decision as he whirls his sling.

In the end (hopefully not too far removed from the beginning), Paddy convinces himself that like the gridbugs before, Clarus cannot be real anyway. Before any existential paradox can surface (he wouldn't know one from a shoehorn regardless), he looses his magical stone at the red disk.

[[Gedanken GM]] The disk is very small, even tiny, and it is being held in the mouth of the dogcow, thus making it an even harder target. Nevertheless, the stone flies with a greater accuracy than Paddy could naturally have achieved and almost hits the token. Instead it hits the poor dogcow in the jaw. The innocent creature goes down, its mouth spattered with blood, howling in pain. The token is free for the taking.

As one of the Black Hands reaches for the token, Flynn's voice fills the pasture. "You bastard! What did she ever do to you? Take your token and leave." Flynn is clearly upset and angry.

[[ooc]] However, hurting or killing Clarus is entirely within the scope and rules of the game--Flynn never said anything about it.

-The Black Hands now have three tokens.
-Nobody is able to recover the blue shot stone.
-The blue stones add 5 to a missile saving roll. A roll of 3 or 4 (no doubles) is still an automatic failure.
-Guess what? The Black Hands meet a wandering monster in node 5. I'll write that one up next time.
-Nitro is still injured. Perhaps you should think of a way to heal him?

[[Paddy]] thought he had steeled himself for this potentiality. The respite in the Leprechaun's congenital bad luck is indeed over: now he's back in the business of being an oxymoron. "Fie!" he says to his sling. "Fie!" he says to his remaining crystal bullets. "Fie!" he says to the sky thundering with Flynn's wrath as he picks up the blood-spattered token. "She wasn't real!" he tries to convince himself as a tear falls from his eye onto Clarus' splayed body, cradled by the crumpled grass, still twitching from the cruel, painful, unexpected death dealt by his hand.

He solemnly retrieves his grid bug buckler and rejoins the others at the pasture gate, but not before offering his heart to the strange creature whom he killed to get one step closer to regaining financial independence. His gift takes the form of a limerick, of course:

"Ode to Clarus, Fallen"

Doubly cowdog and dogcow at heart,
But now bloody and lifeless thou art.
To have slain for a token---
O my soul, black and broken!
I repeat my dark curse on foul Walmart!

[[OOC]] I am confused as to whether or not Clarus has actually expired! If has not, then include the following paragraph. The second paragraph below should be included regardless.

[[Paddy]] notes Charlie rushing to comfort Clarus. The Leprechaun turns, arms flailing, as if to try to keep her from the grisly sight, but then he realizes the dogcow is not dead! Relieved, he nevertheless comments to Nitro, "Blarney! Waste of a good ode."

As the Black Hands regroup (with or without Clarus), Paddy offers, "Mayhap we should go back to the gazebo to heal our wounds? Try these cursed stones as agents of healing rather than harming?" he offers to Nitro, as if agreeing with an unspoken thought of his. "Might even work on our poor dogcow...."

"That was a mean thing to do." Wendy said, staring at the creature. "Even if it wasn't real were supposed to act like they are."
She follows the others out the door.

That being the case, Nitro would like to give the evil dogcow a club to the head.

Clarus is not dead at the time the Black Hands leave. Whether she is saved or not is for another story.

Your team has plenty of blue stones--around a dozen, IIR. You also have three red tokens and several blue tokens. I don't remember exactly how many blue tokens, but it is at least five.

Paddy's shield will give him 3 points of protection.

What is real? What is alive? What is life? Death for the Black Hands is not permanent, but does that mean nothing in this phantom reality can die or that nothing is alive? Flesh is not a necessary property of life in Trollword, so why should it be in the digital world inside of ENCOM?

>[[Paddy]] Ö he nevertheless comments to Nitro, "Blarney! Waste of a good ode."

Word.

> Paddy offers, "Mayhap we should go back to the gazebo to heal our wounds? Try these cursed stones as agents of healing rather than harming?" he offers to Nitro, as if agreeing with an unspoken thought of his.

Nitro thinks thinking is overrated.

>"Might even work on our poor dogcow...."

Nitro thinks there is no way something like that should be wasted on the evil dogcow.

>Calenril: Clarus is not dead at the time the Black Hands leave. Whether she is saved or not is for another story.

Next time Nitro will try harder.

>Your team has plenty of blue stones--around a dozen, IIR.

IIR, GRR, ARGH!

>You also have three red tokens and several blue tokens. I don't remember exactly how many blue tokens, but it is at least five

So how many more tokens do we need?
Itís been a whileÖ

>What is real?

Taxes.

>What is alive?

Unfortunately, both a dogcow and Krandar.
(Whoops, wrong game.)

>What is life?

A fabulous game by Parker Brothers, I believe. (Or is it Hasbro?)

>Death for the Black Hands is not permanent, but does that mean nothing in this phantom reality can die or that nothing is alive? Flesh is not a necessary property of life in Trollword, so why should it be in the digital world inside of ENCOM?

Whatís the legal status of a digital ghost?

Heading out to Korea for 2 weeks.

If I can't find access to a computer while I'm there, Nitro will cede leadership to Paddy and follow his plans.
