Cliff, Carl Payne and I spent July 11 through 15 in St. Louis for the 62nd Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Although all three of us enjoyed the fellowship with other confessional Lutherans from around the country, the synodical convention was an absolute disaster. We had all expected the liberals to continue to gather support and continue to drag the LC—MS away from its confessional heritage, but the *scale* of the liberal onslaught was overwhelming. Those pastors who had hoped the LC—MS might move in a more conservative direction were crushed; I can't even count how many of the pastors (and laymen) were left simply shaking their heads at the total control Kieschnick exercised over the convention.

The imposition of a more 'episcopal' form of polity, as well as the synod's drift on the doctrine of fellowship and promoting unScriptural roles for women in the Church are among the issues which WILL lead some pastors and congregations to withdraw from this church body.
