Why I'm hiking the PCT
Why do I want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico
to Canada? Well, in the immortal words of Monty Python,
"and now for something completely different..."
I guess the real reason is that it's my dream. I want
to walk the land and experience the country in a way that
few people ever get to imagine. I want to see the wind,
hear the rocks, smell the water, and taste the sky. I
want a challenge beyond anything I have ever done.
The PCT joins 3 states, 3 countries, and nearly 2700
miles of dirt, rock, sand, and snow. I plan to walk about
20 miles per day over the course of 4 1/2 months. At some
point it will become an 8 hr/day job but the only real
deadlines are the setting sun and the coming of winter.
I know there are no guarantees. We are all given this
thing called life and we struggle to make sense of it.
We work, we play, we build relationships, we try to create
order. We try to get it all done before the hourglass
runs out of sand. I guess that's where I am. I'm confident,
I'm nervous, I'm ready and not ready all at the same time.
I anticipate the hike to be the hardest thing I've ever
done. I know it will take everything I have to fight through
the heat, bugs, injuries, and mental fatigue. I may not
make it but the important thing is to try.
I could not attempt this journey without the love and
support of my wife, Cynthia. I will miss her beyond written
words but we are a team and I will carry her with me every
step of the way. She will send food boxes and emotional
support. I will send back my journals and worn out equipment.
Together we will hike inexorably north until we reach
the border or until the body or the weather gives out.
See you on the trail,
Henry
