At approx. 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2001, The North Canaan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at the Historic Union Station in Canaan. The Firefighters had previously completed a pre-plan on this building using mutual aid from neighboring fire dpeartments including a ladder truck from Great Barrington, MA and Sharon, CT. According to by-standers, a decision was made early on to fight the fire from the center near the old ticket booth and work back to the east towards the suspected place of origin, the restaurant. The northern section of the station, including the General Offices of the Housatonic Railroad were saved. HRRC moved a number of high side gondolas, recently leased for a job in Danbury, into place to be used for demolition purposes. The Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
