Document preparation vs Word Processor: LyX!

I've been using this package for about two weeks. It combines the strengths of LaTeX with the convenience of a (more or less) WYSIWYG editor.

Actually, LyX claims to be a "What you get is what you mean" (WYGIWYM) editor.

You can get LyX at http://www.lyx.org/. It has a lot of documentation in the downloaded program under "help."

Some additional useful documentation is at http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/lyx/

Why LyX (or LaTeX, for that matter)?

- Sections, equations, bibliographic citations, etc., numbered and easily cross referenced.
- Stable. In other words, it works, unlike a Microsoft product with a similar name.,
- Portable - runs on Linux, Mac, WIndoze, etc. without font problems characteristic of Microsoft products.
- Did I mention microsoft?
- Did I mention that LyX and LaTeX are free?

If you do any technical writing at all, LyX is well worth the time to learn. There's a mailing list for support from a user community.

See http://www.stat.rice.edu/~helpdesk/howto/lyxguide.html and http://www.lyx.org/ for further information.
