adding packages to LaTeX/teTeX on Mac OS X



This is a very simple procedure, but it took me awhile to find out how to do it.

I added the harvard package to latex so that I could format my bibliography to meet publishers requirements, but TeXShop wouldn't find it.

Here's the procedure:

(1) Put your package into /sw/etc/texmf.local You will likely need to authenticate or use sudo to do this.
(2) In an xterm, cd to /sw/etc/texmf.local
(3) Type in the command sudo mktexlsr and TeXShop (and normal LaTeX) should find the package.
