I. Lk 4 temptation
1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” 9And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ 11and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 12And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.-Luke 4:1-13, ESV
II. From my diary Aug 13 2008
My 4:1 then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

At the end of ch 3 Jesus is accepted and proclaimed, first by John the Baptist, then by the Father himself. Then:

1) he was led by the Spirit. The first activity of Jesus was to follow the HS.

2) into the desert - the Spirit took him from comfort into desolation.

3) to be tempted by the devil. This was God's idea? Yes. After great acceptance came feigned worship and offer of power. Jesus held fast to the truth.

Mt 4:11
III. And then it was done
11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.-Matthew 4:11, ESV
IV. Reflections on temptation
V. Sources of temptation
13Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.-James 1:13-15, ESV
VI. Jesus understands
15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.-Hebrews 4:15-16, ESV
VII. Reactions to repentance
Not everyone will agree with your standards of right and wrong. In fact, they will try to convince you otherwise. (Remember, temptation looks good, or else it wouldn't be tempting.)
VIII. Peer pressure
3For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;-1 Peter 4:3-4, ESV
IX. What to do?
What's better? To avoid temptation or to resist temptation?

Avoiding: don't put yourself on a position where temptation occurs.
Resisting: discipline of the mind (habits) so that you don't give in when temptation comes.

Answer: we need both. Jesus taught us to pray, but we also see in the lesson that temptation will come.
X. Lead us not...
13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.-Matthew 6:13, ESV
XI. Be busy!
After his temptation Jesus immediately got busy working and helping people.
XII. What Jesus did
17From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 18While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. 23And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.-Matthew 4:17-24, ESV
