LBC Youth Lesson for Aug 19: The importance of teaching the Bible

2 Tim 4:1-4

In preparation for this lesson I decided to memorize the passage. (I'm also memorizing Galatians 1 as part of our memory challenge for this year.) The two passages, juxtaposed in my mind, give a window into Paul's desperation and struggle for the gospel. Desperation may not be the right word, but passion is overused these days. Today's passage (from ESV) is:

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

Preach the word!

Be ready in season and out of season: reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching, for a time is coming when people will no longer endure sound teaching, but, having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and they will turn away from listening to the truth, and wander off into myths.

As for you: always be sober minded, endure suffering. Do the work of an evangelist.

Fulfill your ministry.

This is the last professional command in Paul's last letter to his "son in the faith." Those last three words ring in my thoughts. Paul's desperate charge, his final thoughts, measured and carefully aimed, are that Timothy recognize God's purpose in his life, to accept the cost, and to fulfill that purpose.

Good words for us as well.
