"Why do you love me?"

I think nearly every couple has asked each other that question, sometimes fishing for a complement, sometimes in disbelief that one could be loved someone so wonderful.

The question misunderstands the nature of love.

Love, as understood in the Bible, is unconditional. It is axiomatic - it exists on its own. It is not an implication of any other facts or events, it is the source of those events. In my bout with cancer, I do not look for God to prove his love to me, I merely know that it is because he's made it plain to me. Don't ask me how, he just has.

"Why do you love me?" His answer is "Because I do." Sort of like that conversation with Moses: "I am that I am." He loves because he is love.

Why can we love him? "We love him because he first loved us." Apart from the transformation of Christ by faith, we cannot love him as we should. However, if you want to try, go ahead. He'll eventually show you his love and set things in order.
