Reflections on Galatians: Part 4: can we legitimately base beliefs on personal experience?

From my personal log, Dec. 4, 2007.

Memorized about half of Galatians 3. Confusing: Paul speaks of receiving the spirit as if there was incontrovertible proof. "Does he who supplies the spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law or by hearing with faith?" Their personal experience and observations were the evidence to which Paul appealed.

Ask most people I know how they know they have the spirit and their answer lacks this verifiable nature, even those who speak in tongues. So what's up?

Note to legalists The answer to Paul's question is "by hearing with faith," not by deeds, regardless of what your experience or personal testimony may be.
