News from Auburn Friday December 5 2005
In this
issue:
- a few anecdotes and fun stories from
the week
- a short health
update.
The big news of the week came
out in my cancer update on Dec 1.
Other than the biopsy results, this week has been
fairly quiet. Events/experiences of
interest:- Viva's parents are here and
have started to remodel nearly the entire house. No, not quite that much,
but they're keeping pretty busy! We're enjoying home made bread, Viva gets
omelettes in the morning before she leaves for work at 6 am, and I get to eat
plain honey-oat bread and baked potatoes. (That's about as exciting a
variety of food as I can stomach right
now.)- Wednesday night I finally gave
a lecture to our church's college group on oral tradition and the reliability of
the Bible. As part of the lecture I recited Paul's letter to the Galatians
(nearly 7 pages or 25 minutes) from memory. It would be more accurate to
say I tried to perform the letter. It was well received; a friend (who
wishes to remain anonymous) will post the video to my YouTube site http://www.youtube.com/hodelas
sometime in the next few days.Adam
said that, in spite of the biopsy and cancer issues at our house, I absolutely
MUST give this lecture. "I've never seen anyone else do that Dad, so you
have to do it so that I can say you're the only one I've seen do it!" At
the end of the talk I concluded with a picture of Calvin and Hobbes (cartoon)
and the phrase, "And that's it!" Adam jumped up from his seat in triumph
as if our football team just won the conference: "THAT'S MY DAD!" he said.
Yup, that felt good.- Today I
went to the office in the afternoon to take care of some errands. Did you
know you can buy usb memory sticks with 8 GIGABYTES of memory on them? That's
obscene! I've also seen 1.5 terabyte external hard drives for less than
$250. Incredible.- Some of my
colleagues (my dept. head and another professor) saw me at the University
bookstore today. My dept. head and I spoke for a few minutes and then the
other guy asked me if my hair was real. tugged on it to show that it
was real . "It looks too good to be real."
he said. I replied, Thank you
... I think...- Another colleague
saw me with my oxygen tank and asked how I refill
it. I have a concentrator at home and two
tanks. I fill one tank while using the
other. "How does the concentrator work?"
he asked. As a fellow engineer, I knew what
he meant but I couldn't resist: You flip
two black switches and it
goes.Health
update I have an appointment at UAB
this Tuesday at 10. Unfortunately, that's the same time as my PhD student
has her general doctoral exam (also called the oral prelim exam).
Fortunately, the appointment will likely be delayed so that we can do
CT/PET scans on the same day as the consult. It's over 200 miles round
trip to Birmingham and back, and the people there have been very helpful to try
to reduce our travel time. It will be good to get treatment started again,
even if it means descending once again into the fog of
chemo-brain.I'll keep you posted on
what happens as it comes. For now, as long as I eat bland foods, my tummy
feels mostly ok and I'm doing very well, walking on my own, etc. We're
doing ok. Except for being nervous. Otherwise we're
ok.That's it for this
week!
