News from Auburn Sat Sept 5 2008

I've completed my first week back at home, and it's been good to live a "normal" life for a bit.  Some highlights of the week:

On Sunday Viva and I had this conversation on the way to church:
Me: It's August 31!
Viva: What of it?
Me: It's our 23rd anniversary!
Viva: Oh, it is!

Chemo-brain (the fog of chemotherapy) seems to be gone.  Last weekend I wrote about a third of a conference paper with a colleague in Huntsville [by email; I was in Auburn!].  This week I've been reviewing my grad students' work and starting to be an advisor again.  It feels good.  It's also good to see how the last few months have affected my attitude on things.  There's plenty that needs done, but (so far) the stress and pressure aren't there.  <religion warning> I'm learning to trust Christ day by day. <end religion warning>

Viva took me out for a  "test drive" in our van.  If I sit in the back door, I have the strength to lift my wheelchair, so I am now officially "independent."  I will say that if you want a good upper body workout, take my wheelchair from my office to the Auburn bookstore and back!

The kids are starting their 4th week of classes at Auburn.

Monday I go to UAB for a CT/PET scan to check tumor progress.  I'll send an update on that as soon as I have news.

Note If you find yourself going through long term medical care, keep a log of appointments and tests.  It will help when you go through the insurance paperwork!  (Who'd have thought I'd forget what day I had a bone marrow biopsy?)
