Chinatown

Starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway

My father always says that he watches moves to escape reality... This movie doesn't cut it by that standard. It was produced in the 1970's but set in the ... you know, I don't know. The IMDB (Internet Movie Database) has this movie in the top 250- at number 48.

Okay, yeah, this movie was good and I wanted to figure out what was going on... but I'm not sure that I did. And I expected a happy ending. Movies like that usually have happy endings. Now, I don't want to give it away (because that would be no fun!) but it doesn't have a happy ending.

I watched this film at the local high school's Film Appreciation Club. My boyfriend wanted to go since they were having themed food (Chinatown= Chinese food). I wasn't going to go (It was tuesday night, and we all know that tuesday night is reserved religiously for Gilmore GIrls) but Gilmore GIrls wasn't on that night. The WB was showing some horrid holiday movie. Now, some holiday films are actually good... like the Miracle on 34th street(the old one), It's a Wonderful Life, and (of course) Muppet Christmas Carol... but the "made-for-tv" holiday movies are generally just cheesy.

But this isn't a review of that horrid movie that I didn't actually see. This is about Chinatown.

There was talent in this film. It was a "Who-dun-it" ..sort of. There was more than one mystery to be solved and I still don't know what was going on. See what college has done to me?

I give this film a 10.5. I find it fitting to give it the same rating as The Day After Tomorrow. See, Kyle didn't like that film and I did. Kyle DID like Chinatown (as president of that Film Appreciation thingy, he chose the film) and I wasn't too fond of it. I'd say ... rent this and watch it with friends. It's not one I'd like to own.

Oh yeah - not a kids movie. Some questionable scenes. That and it's a (sort of) murder mystery.
