GladiatorHaven't I seen this plot before?
Think of it as Ben Hur, except with an unhappy
ending: everybody dies. Or, think of it as Spartacus, except with only the
arena and betrayal and no Jean Simmons.
![]() Some of my martial arts buddies recommended this to me back in spring 2000 because it's very realistic. Now that I've seen it, I now agree with my original thought: why would I want to see a realistic portrayal of gladiators in the arena? ![]() Now, the acting is pretty good. For example, my brother-in-law told me, "I don't believe in a devil, but if he was real, he'd look like that," pointing at the guy playing the emperor who betrayed his father and Maximum (Russell Crowe). So, if you enjoy that kind of intense edge-of-your-seat acting and fighting stuff, this movie is for you. I think I'll go back and watch Stargate for something that doesn't take itself so seriously.
