Such potential ... or not.

Other web reviews call this movie a romantic comedy. Another compares the film to strapping to cats together, throwing them in the dryer and expecting them to mate. I rather like the second review.

This film contains the seeds of a romantic comedy, but the harvest that came to fruition is primarily composed of
* sycophantic idolatry
* adolescent infatuation with sexuality, which is to say,
* child porn [Yes, she had everything covered, but if it weren't covered the film wouldn't have changed that much. Of course, I don't know that for sure since once I realized what was going on I kept my back to the screen until she was done singing.]

Ok, the Cora character (a girl singer/dancer collage of characters) is expected to be a shallow, childish, foolish character that everyone idolizes and accomodates because of their own agendas. The actress herself likely was still in high school when she played the role, and her character shows the personality of a turtle, except when performing, when my complaints above come to the front.

However, the other characters - played by Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, and other adults who ought to have a lick of sense demonstrate their own arrested development. Their thoughts, and in turn, their lives are effectively empty of meaning.

Of course, maybe that was the point of the movie. Maybe the writers and producers wanted us to know and see just how silly the American Idol infatuation truly is, and to guide us toward a more productive form of meditation and introspection.

Maybe, but it's still a dumb movie that I wish I hadn't seen.
