Godspell: A Musical Based on St. Matthew.
Viva bought this for me as a gift. It still
gives me chills. It gets a 4.5 not because of its technical excellence, but
because of the impact it still has on me.

I've
been told that Stephen Schwartz attended a church back in the late 60's/early
70's and was asked to leave because he wasn't dressed appropriately. From this
experience was born Godspell, a musical whose script is lifted nearly verbatim
from the Gospel of Matthew and, further, in which no one is dressed
appropriately - for a 1972 church, anyway. This film doesn't grow old on me,
even though the styles and acting are certainly
dated.
See
the film!John hums "Prepare ye the way
of the Lord" - and I have chills run down my spine. Imagine - being there, to
hear him announce that Christ is coming - and then to see Christ
come!Update
April 24 2006: STILL gives me chills. The parable of Lazarus and the rich man
had me on my knees. The Christian calling is nothing to be trifled with. This
is a big job!The only thing this film
is missing is a resurrection. However, if you're really nice, I might send you
a copy of the April 2000 musical in which I played a few small parts. That one
had a resurrection. When I was in the
play, I discovered firsthand why the cast of the film was in their 20's. I
couldn't walk stairs for a
month!From our stage
production:

God, I'm bleeding!" (Jesus played by Jeff, worship leader at Asbury UMC, Madison
