  | Our first stop after leaving Piraeus was the Peleponnesian city of Nauplion. (I know it's not an island, but what the hey.)

  | I was looking forward to this stop because we were on a tour to the Epidauros. Epidauros is home to an ancient Greek amphitheater, and 40 years ago, I had the great good luck to come across the theater just in time to catch an ancient greek play. As you might guess, the theater is little changed from my last visit.

  | Our ship was moored at Nauplion, which was once under the control of Venice. The Venetians built a huge fort here called the Palamidi Fortress, which we got to tour.

  | The Palamidi has a commanding view of the harbor at Nauplion, including the Silver Wind.

  | If you did anything to upset the Venetians, they shipped you off to the Island of Bourdzi, where the staff specialized in executions.

  | We sailed that evening for the island of Santorini in the Cyclades.
