How to Glasritzen

The only special tool required is a pen point that contains diamond particles. You can enjoy glasritzen at any place where there is a desk.

If you live in Tokyo, a few types of pen point or starters' kits are available in Tokyu Hands in Sinjuku, Ikebukuro and Shibuya. You can try glasritzen by using the existent beautiful motifs that are also sold at those places.

The circumstances outside of Japan are unknown to me... However, this technique has derived from Europe and should be still alive in Switzerland at least. It is unfortunate to hear that glasritzen has lost its popularity quite a while ago in Europe because it costs much labor.

I sincerely hope that this beautiful handiwork will survive and regain popularity in the world.

Basic Tools:

  • ethanol for disinfection
  • adhesive tape
  • oil based ink pen (extra thin)
  • diamond pen point and its holder
  • scissors
  • tissue paper
  • small towel
  • black cloth(to spread underneath)

Basic Steps:

  1. Cut a motif drawn on a sheet of paper and attach it on the glass using the adhesive tape.
  2. Adher the motif closely to the glass by pressing the small towel tightly from the back of the motif.
  3. Copy the contours of the motif with the ink pen. Take the motif paper off the glass.
  4. Copy the contours of the ink with the diamond point pen with the least pen pressure possible, although the lines should be barely visible when the ink markers are erased.
  5. Erase the ink using a tissue of paper soaked with the ethanol. Place the glass on a piece of black cloth and start engraving it carefully looking at the motif.
