The
man You can see in this picture was, in his timee, the frontman of the first
boygroup in countrymusic history. Recruited by fiddler Gid Tanner the became
known as the Skillett Lickers and dominated the rural dance music scene
for almost 7 years. Of course it was a time when television played no part,
so they had to bring along some skills rather than goodlooks.
Their music, collectivly known as Hillbilly, was not much different from
rave music of today. Stupendous melodies set to driving rhythms made the
audience dance til they broke down. The extacy drugs of the day were booze
and even morphine both strictly illegal. The only difference to today was
that this music was strictly handmade.
As to be expected the band broke up in the late twenties as rivalries in
the band became unbearable.
While, except Tanner, all others embarked on solo careers, times for blind
Puckett were harder, making it impossible to do tours that require a lot
of travelling. Still he made a number of remarkable recordings like the
original recording of "Red River Valley" and the classic "Ragged
but Right." But he remained a difficult character to deal with. In
the last years of his life he was a radio artist, and died of blood poisoning
in 1946. |
