When Kid Rock's DJ looked at Posters on Nashville airport he was attracted by a poster that bore his future stagename: Uncle. Not a bad choice, as he does, like his namesake, Uncle Dave Macon, cross between all popular styles of our time. But unlike Uncle Kracker, Macon started off his career at a time when Kracker will think of retirement.
Originally he was out to start an early career as a Trick-banjo player", but his youthful dreams were shattered when his father was stabbed to death. Dave Macon had to earn the family living and started a transport business that he ran until the early twenties. He only decided to give up, when his competitor switched from mule carriages to trucks. Thinking of retirement he discovered his old ambitions when doing a little concert to make money for a churchdoor repair. Performing at a local barbershop he was probably approached by a talent scout for Loew's theaters.
At the age of 55 he became an amzingly popular recording star and would soon be the star of the Grand Old Opry. He stayed on the show virtually to his last breath in '53, and left a huge heritage of recordings behind, ranging from Minstrel to political songs.
