The Carter Family were discovered at the famous Bristol Sessions conducted by Ralph Peer in the Summer of 1927. They immediatly drew the attention of Peer on them, mainly because their harmony arrangements were something way out of the usual.
The mastermind of the trio was A.P. Carter who was married to Sarah, where as Maybelle was married to A.P.'s brother. For 14 years they were the dominating traditional music group. A.P. collected hundreds of song, arranged, and copyrighted them. The most well known song might be "Can the Circle be unbroken?" That was also the titletrack of the all time classic collaborative album of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
After A.P. thought Maybelle's guitar arrangements too dull, he asked black singer and later preacher Leslie Riddle, also a source for many Carter classics, to teach her his way of accompaning a song with bass lines. The adopted style became a trademark for country guitar until today.
After their breakup in 1941 "Mother" Maybelle continued a career along with her three infant daughters.
