I have been interested in the Pontiac Fiero since the 1984 model came out in late 1983. The first one I saw was on display as a grand prize in a Navy Relief fund drive. I immediately fell in love with the look of the car. To me, a young Marine, it looked like an affordable Corvette. My feelings about the car were dampened when I test drove a 2M4 automatic. It was the worst slug I had ever driven. I decided quickly that it wasn't going to be my first new vehicle and bought a Honda VT500ft Ascot motorcycle instead. In 1985, the GT was released and I wasn't too sure I liked the aero-nose. Anyway, I was no longer in a position to buy a new car because of the bike payments and insurance. In 86, my interest in the Fiero was re-kindled when I had the chance to drive a brand new 86 GT a couple of times while on vacation in Missouri. I thought the handling of the car was fantastic; especially on the curvy roads between Cuba and Steelville. I new it would take a couple of years, but I wanted one again. After I got out of the Marines in 1989 I started working a civilian job at Grand Forks Air Force Base. I decided it was time, and was shopping for A Fiero when I stumbled on a slightly used 88 IROC Z Camaro. I took the Camaro out for a test drive, and the whole Fiero idea was quickly forgotten. I loved my Camaro, but back in 96, I had too many vehicles, and I thought that it was the most impractical. The decision was made, and it was gone. Much later, around 1998, I started getting interested in Kit Cars, and to my surprise, the Fiero was the hot topic of the kit car industry! Its bolt on plastic body panels and mid-engine configuration made it a prime target of the fiberglass artists. Finally, in 2001, I came up on a deal I couldn't refuse. I found an 85 Fiero GT for dirt cheap that looked like a pretty good kit car donor. Now I finally have one, and it's far from mint, but there are lots of things I can do. We'll see where it goes from here...
As for the car, it is the only mid-engine car ever produced in significant numbers in the USA. As a production car, it never really became the car that its fans wanted it to be. It was beaten up by the car magazines throughout it's run when compared to the Toyota MR2 and other imports. I remember an article I once read, it was from either Road and Track or Car and Driver where they compared it to the MR2. It beat the MR2 in almost every category, but they picked the Toyota because they liked it better!
The Fiero also had a reputation for catching fire. It was due to low quality connecting rods and and an unshielded exhaust manifold. Cheap connecting rods would break, blow through the crankcase, and throw oil all over the hot unshielded manifolds. The problem was eventually resolved by a major recall, but the reputation still remains stuck in many minds.
1988 looked like the year that Pontiac was going to get serious with the car's performance. 1988 brought major suspension and brake upgrades along with other improvements. Even more upgrades were planned for 1989. Planned upgrades included a 3.1 liter engine, electric power steering, styling changes, and other items. Unfortunately, Fiero enthusiasts were left disappointed when the Fiero was discontinued after the 1988 production run. GM cancelled the car before it had a chance to mature. It was the kind of decision Denny Green used to make with Vikings quarterbacks. Since then, many enthusiasts and aftermarket companies got busy making the fiero into the car it should have been. Available after-market parts range from simple engine performance upgrades and body mods, to complete V-8 conversions and re-body kits that look exactly like the Italian supercars.
Well, Two former Vikings quarterbacks went head to head in the 2003 Superbowl, and Fiero enthusiasts are rebuilding their cars with state of the art upgrades and achieving unbelievable performance and styling! Denny and GM both blew it.
Anyway, here is my list of fiero links, and I invite you to hit all these sites to learn about this intriguing car. I don't have a ratings system for these links yet and they are not very organized, but you can tell the ones I was most impressed with by the amount of text in my descriptions! Whatever the case, they all have something I found interesting or they wouldn't have made the list.
I am always surfing around looking for new sites, and If you know of any others that should be here, please email me with the URL.
