Merlin Newsboy #55

I had an early Merlin "Mountain" (frame #389) and liked it; Sold it in '92 to buy my Cunningham;
I thought I was over the "Ti" thing until Merlin announced Newsboy production at Interbike '94.

I wanted ONLY the headtube decal but Merlin put them all on.
Frame #55 of what was supposed to be 100.
Nice welds.
Size "Large" of S/M/L; The brochure (posted) said it's a 19" (actual) frame.
The frame flexes quite a bit; Tires wider than these Ritchey Moby-Bites can rub.
Setup for a suspension fork, big-time room above tire in front.
Sweet curves.
Potts Type-II fork's dropout spacing is the "Extra-Extra" wide 118mm.
Nasty cable routing preserves the clean lines; Zip tie keeps it off the headset.
WTB Toggle Cams; Note the grease port on the brake arm.
Front braking doesn't get much better than this!
I had Potts finish the fork with just bead blasting and a "clear" powder coat...
Finish isn't holding up, but I do like seeing the brazing work (brass color).
WTB said "no more 118 hubs" - but Harlan Meyers (Hi-E) said "Anything you want".
WTB QR's; The "spoon" shape on Type-II's is Steve Pott's signature look.
Nice, beefy Cook Bros. Racing 181mm cranks.
Grafton pedals that refuse to break (Suntour XC-Pros awaiting); WTB Toe Flips.
Ultra-duty, ultra-rare Fisher "Double" clips; Specialized "XLong Binda" straps.
Ron Andrews' (Ti) "King Cages".
Had Merlin do 140mm rear dropout spacing instead of standard 135mm.
WTB New Paradigm 140mm 8sp cassette hub and QR.
Cunningham (not WTB) Lightweight QR; SWEET!
The 'Ham QR again.
Cunningham Fixed Angle seatpost; MORE SWEETNESS!
Note the taper of the seatpost BELOW the top 3" -- keeps the top end heavy duty.
WTB Ti Flat Bars: 24" wide with a big 13-deg sweep angle.
Ultra-cool custom Ti "Axis Design" stem by Chris Paretich.
1-1/8" expander bolt stem; King Two-Nut headset; Note cool "Noodle" stop/guide.
Newsboys came with a WTB Roller Cam and a truly sh*tty setup.
To solve that, I talked real sweet to Mr. Cunningham... who REALLY fixed me up.
Toggle Cam conversion; Brake Bridge; Mud Guard; Modified cable guide/routing.
Nifty fix to problematic deraileur cable routing (pin inserted in brake boss).
A lot happening down there; Works incredibly well now (Thanks Charlie!).
Top side of custom mud guard.
The "cam" in Toggle Cam.
