WTB Ti Phoenix (S&S) #98044

The bike I probably ride the most... Definitely the most versatile; I had a sense when building this that I was getting it at the "zenith" of WTB's parts, abilities, etc.

Steve Potts built all the WTB Phoenix's -- Originally in steel...
and then more and more frequently in Ti starting about '96.
The 44th frame of 1998?
My first drop-bar MTB!!.. finally making up for doing my '91-2 'Ham "wrong" <g>.
As Ronco says: "But wait there's more!"... it's an "S&S" bike.
Cool couplings that break down the bike for travel (www.sandsmachine.com).
Steve's first (and only?) S&S -- He spent a LOT of time getting this perfect.
But wait there's still more!: I wanted the versatility of both bar types...
This dual-personality (2 min. changeover) was made possible by a few tricks...
...that also help the S&S setup: like the deraileur cable splitters...
...and ensuring cables come off easy (note the cool, custom, slotted noodle).
This is basically the geometry of a "size large" Phoenix: ~22" (24" top tube).
Steve dropped the front end (longer steerer), i.e., NOT "suspension corrected".
All this makes for a very big bike (right for my 6'5" size).
Sweet rear-quarter view...
...almost as nice as a 'Ham <g>.
Went with seatstay-mounted brakes because cabling works better for S&S setup.
The two stems (drop and flat bar) were made beautifully in Ti by Wes Williams.
Equivalent flat bar view; Both stems were spec'ed from 'Ham FitFinder.
Potts Type-II fork in the sweet, 118mm "Extra Wide" configuration.
Steve did an absolutely brilliant job on this bike -- I can't thank him enough!
Super-beefy "Breeze" style dropouts.
And the inside view.
Type-II's were just bead-blasted and powder coated "clear"...
...which matches the Ti frame well and allows Steve's sweet brazing to show.
Bike works great with the big 2.5-class tires.
WTB Toggle Cams front and rear on this bike.
WTB still wouldn't do more Extra-Wide hubs so back to Harlan Meyers for a Hi-E.
A very tall, steep stem. Only thing better would have been an "LD".
WTB Drops; Chris King Two-Nut headset; Paragon cable hanger.
Shimano 600 levers, shifters w/Chris Kelly's great "Take Offs" (kellybike.com).
The obligatory inline cable adjusters.
Flat bar setup w/ Paul's levers and XTR shifters; WTB 24" 13-deg Ti Bar, Grips.
Blackburn Bomber on the ideal 3-stud mounting, also an Andrews King Cage.
A big Thompson post (holding a WTB-modified Zefal), Potts clamp.
Front Deraileur is an XT on a custom Manitou band; Cranks are also special...
Morati (Ti) from Czech Republic. Super strong and stiff.
WTB New Paradigm rear freehub; WTB QR's for the wheels.
XTR rear deraileur.
WTB Toggle Cam with Bridge.
Nice, simple, easy-to-remove cable routing.
As David Letterman would say: "Mmmmm..... Gravy!"
And when you need a plane to get to the trail... you pack it like this!
I actually took these "box" photos and take them with me on trips...
...so I can remember how it all goes together.
26 x 26 x 12 inches.
And no surcharge from the airlines!!
