I meant what I said, and I said what I meant
Another sore point.
I maintain a fairly active presence online. For
good or ill, I'm more interactive online than I am in real life. Sometimes there
are discussions about topics on which there is not 100% agreement. Wacky, I
know, but it
does
happen. Funny thing is, fairly regularly - maybe 2 or three times a week - I
find myself attacked for something I never said. And don't believe. Sometimes
people will go to great lengths to construct a counter to an argument that was
never made.
So here's a suggestion:
When you read a post in some online forum, remember that there's no body
language. There are no facial expressions beyond hopelessly inadequate
emoticons. There is no tone of voice. So give people enough credit to assume
that they meant what they wrote. If they meant something else and didn't say it,
that's their problem.
