The War On the War On the War On Christmas

Musing on an invented conflict.

The War On Christmas is a big topic. It's been popping up pretty much annually lately, but this year seems especially virulent. Television, online forae and newspaper letters pages are filled with complaints about the "(liberal) war on Christmas." Funny thing is, it doesn't exist. There is no "war on Christmas" coming from liberals or any other philosophical group. Not once has anyone, outside the context of being a paid representative, been told by an authority figure that they are not allowed to use the word 'Christmas.' Private individuals speaking their own mind can say the word all they like. Other people can ask that they not do so. And both things are quite clearly covered by the first amendment. So if there's no war on Christmas, what's all the to-do? The to-do is from a small, but very loud group of people who want their belief (which they think is Christianity no matter how much it differs from the beliefs of the Christians next door and the other Christians down the block) to be declared as a state religion and are offended when their specific belief system isn't catered to. So to those people, on this lovely December morning, I wish a heart-felt and sincere "happy holidays." And if feeling offended is what it takes to make you happy: Have a ball.
