What's in a Name?

Or, Madison needs to be stopped

A few naming issues, which, as you know, we love to talk about here at Stonesthrow.

First, because they're going to build a duplex next to us, which we are going to fight at a zoning meeting Thursday night, we got an architectural sketch of our street which had an arcane version of our street name. Instead of Chestnut Street, our little strip was once called "Freeland Place." Stonesthrow at Freeland Place. Yes. Yes, indeed. Expect stationery soon.

Second, they've been publicizing the list of names put out by the Social Security Administration (hat tip to these guys, which I'll discuss in a minute). My observations:
• Madison is at #3. Sick and wrong. Sick and wrong.
• Isabella is at #6; Ava at #9: explain that to me.
• We of course checked our names: Richard is at #93, its worst showing in 50 years. In Rick's year of birth it was 10th. Gregory is a shockingly yet pleasingly low 203, also a 50-year low; even just ten years ago it was in the top 100, and in my year of birth it was 26th. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of my name, but it's strange to me that there are 202 more popular names...who even knew there were that many? Names beating me this year? Sebastian (#86), Gage (#148), and Dalton (#180). So many parents are planning for their children to go into porn. It's nice to see. Also, a lot of these top ten boy names (I'm thinking Ethan in particular) are not good baseball names: Edgar, by the way, is #167.

Third, Blog names are fun. My coterie have some lovely examples, and indeed mine pales, though I have one in my head that I may use down the road if I ever re-launch. Others that I read that I love:
A List of Things Thrown Five Minutes Ago: good pop culture blog
Philadelphia Will Do: I just think of the line from Babe all the time, and it fits this crazy city; you should really check in on this blog periodically to experience the strangeness of this place.
Rowhouse Logic: See above.
She Flies with her Own Wings: the bloggers pseudonym, Coeruleus, is also very cool.
Echidne of the Snakes: a good feminist blogger

Any others you'd like to suggest?

Fourth, Dave put forward a blog request, kind of like when you're at a piano bar. He wanted me to deal with the word homosexual, specifically in the context of these uses:

• I am homosexual
• I am a homosexual

I'm going to leave that off until the next post.

PS: I voted in our primaries yesterday, one of like three people to do so. I love voting. I distinctly remember going with my mom to vote, and being able to "vote" on a mock ballot and such. So cool. Anywho, I asked the poll ladies how I could volunteer to work at the polls, and they said to call such and such number, but that also the Democrats were looking for people to be committeepersons for the borough. I talked to the woman outside (handing out information and such) who was the outgoing committeeperson, and she talked about the responsibilities, which really weren't that much. I am mulling doing it. I read blogs all the time that call people to action, and I still do diddly; this would be a step above diddly, but would still be something. Thoughts?
