Politically CorrectOr, the Victims of/in the Right
I don't remember how, but I came across this article from Reason. I don't know that I agree
with everything the guy has to say about political correctness or the left or
the right, but his larger point I do have to agree with: the Right has become
the victims they so decry when they don't agree with
them.
That is, this guy details how the Right has taken on the trappings of the PC crowd they so demonize: they are constantly talking about how people misunderstand and misconstrue, how their ideas, ideals, and freedoms are trampled upon, and how they are discriminated against. The Right has suddenly become a group of victims, such that gay rights is seen as primarily not a movement to advance one group's rights, but a movement to infringe upon another's, as if there is this finite amount of rights, so that we cannot grant one group something without taking it away from another. Like a balanced budget, something these people wouldn't know anything about. What is interesting in all of this is that the hemming and hawing has become its loudest at the very moment when the Right controls everything. I really don't know why that is: I don't remember the Right being so vocal, even 1993, when there was the perfect storm of a democratic president and Congress. If you have everything, why are you so whiny? I think, again, that Americans are sort of waking up to this--that when there are serious problems going on and that we still haven't cleaned up New Orleans (see this Daily Kos photo diary), the Right is more concerned with making sure we sing the national anthem in English and continuing tax cuts for the wealthiest that weren't going to expire for another two years. Blech. November can't come soon enough. Posted: Sun - May 14, 2006 at 03:44 PM | |
