Catching Up

Or, what is the what

Smorgasbord, here we come.

Off to the homeland to visit the 'rents and g'rents--sis will also visit, so much familial merriment. Weather is supposed to be crap, but it's now freezing here with hurricane-force winds, so---meh.

Favorite quote this week: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn't place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."--Jamie Raskin, candidate for the Maryland State Senate, in response to a current Senator's question about the definition of marriage in the Bible. Maryland can be so cool sometimes.

That quote is listed on my Facebook profile. I joined in at the suggestion of some students. It's an interesting exercise in connections, a la Myspace or Friendster, but for college kids. I'm just glad someone else besides me at Ursinus likes Belle and Sebastian (actually, 19). Unfortunately, no one else listed Airport '77 as one of their favorite movies. Kids these days.

I had seen this before Lauren emailed it to me, but if you haven't, you really must take a look at Annie Proulx going off about Brokeback's loss. I mean, if she were a gay man, I'd call her a bitter old queen. Love it. My favorite quote? Well, I don't think you could get much nastier than this:

Roughly 6,000 film industry voters, most in the Los Angeles area, many living cloistered lives behind wrought-iron gates or in deluxe rest-homes, out of touch not only with the shifting larger culture and the yeasty ferment that is America these days, but also out of touch with their own segregated city, decide which films are good. And rumour has it that Lions Gate inundated the academy voters with DVD copies of Trash - excuse me - Crash a few weeks before the ballot deadline. Next year we can look to the awards for controversial themes on the punishment of adulterers with a branding iron in the shape of the letter A, runaway slaves, and the debate over free silver.

No, tell us how you really feel Annie.

I haven't blogged since the great loss; Dave and I had a furious email conversation about it. I may in fact want to go so far as Kenneth Turan did and scream homophobia. I don't know. I think this will be one of those winners that will be forgotten, while Brokeback will hold up...or at least I hope so.

It's time though to start the new movie year, and I have to say I am looking forward to a few, including V for Vendetta, Thank You for Smoking (which I taught in my satire class last year), Poseidon (duh), and, in the fall, For Your Consideration.

(By the way, IMDb's movie of the day is Party Girl; and how do they start their description? "He-he-hello"! It isn't just me that loves that line!!!)

Finally, it's the most wonderful time of the year--Spring Training. I got my letter last week that Season Ticket on Dish Network will be starting soon. I hope to see the M's new commercials soon as well. Oh baseball, you make me so happy.
