Tweety go boom!Or how Chris Matthews just plummeted in my
estimation.
not that he was that high to begin with, but I will
forever enjoy his Zell Miller contretemps and usually I don't
think he's that evil of a guy. However, in just about one day, he's fallen
apart.
First, on the Imus show (for those of you who have never seen/heard it, it is frankly unbearable. I really don't get it. I mean, it's just painful) Wednesday morning, he was talking about Brokeback and said that he hadn't seen it, and then related the following: "Well, the wonderful Michael Savage . . . [laughter] he calls it Bare-back Mount-ing. That's his name for the movie." (Imus's response is just as enlightened) Oh, and before I comment, the Michael Savage to which he refers is a radio "personality" who has said that "radical homosexuals" and "radical Islamists" are "one and the same" and "When you hear 'human rights,' think gays. When you hear 'human rights,' think only one thing: someone who wants to rape your son. ..." Yes, Chris...wonderful. Here's the thing. I have probably made that joke, but, see, I get to. Chris Matthews doesn't. And, sure, he doesn't actually make the joke, but he approves of the joke and approves of the joker. It's not even that good of a joke anyway, but it basically just diminishes the film and reveals once again how afraid straight men are of us. It's just sad. Now, tonight on his own show, he said that Osama bin Laden sounded like Michael Moore. Now, this is not a Moore apologia by any stretch, because, for one thing, he's got that annoying Michigan accent that just grates. However, as Peter Daou says on Salon, what would happen if someone referred to a right-wing person similarly? "Osama sounds like Bill O'Reilly": imagine the shitstorm. This is of course related to my favorite online acronym: IOKIYAR OK, enough media criticism, especially since it is so easy. Posted: Thu - January 19, 2006 at 12:11 AM | |
