Happy Humpday: Special Edition

The (Unheard) Playlist from the Wedding!

In their infinite wisdom, Paul and Laurie asked Ben, Sam, Rebecca, and I to compose playlists for the reception, rather than paying some stupid DJ or band. Ben went with an eclectic mix that was still approachable and good; Sam and Rebecca largely did the same with some funny thrown in. I, however, didn't really care about people. That is, I soon realized that my playlist was a bit too mellow, a bit too unpopular. In fact, I put together an on-the-go playlist that included "Express Yourself" and "Mamma Mia" to get people dancing. However, here is the original playlist, with a few comments.
1. "A Smile in a Whisper," Fairground Attraction: featuring one of the best voices on earth in Eddi Reader, this song became a part of my words during the wedding because it talks about how ridiculous it is to talk about love.
2. "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair (Jaffa remix)," Nina Simone: from the Verve Remixed series, this was a nod to Paul and Laurie's hair, and to me trying to get something up tempo.
3. "Somersault," Zero 7: the second song included in the wedding, this is probably my favorite song of the moment.
4. "Nothing Can Stop Us," Saint Etienne: another up tempo song and a good one at that--so much pep and life
5. "Love," The Sundays: the title doesn't actually say it all, and really, the lyrics don't make it that great a wedding song, but I love it anyway.
6. "World Before Columbus," Suzanne Vega: beautiful song expressing true wonder and devotion for someone. So good.
7. "Movies of Myself," Rufus Wainwright: I felt I had to include Rufus, but most everything he does is so tragic, but this song is an interesting love song of sorts, and also up tempo.
8. "We Belong," Pat Benatar: my playlist is largely current, which I learned is probably not the way to go from Sam and Ben, but this song would have been perfect.
9. "Come What May," Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor: from Moulin Rouge, I think this song is so affecting, in part because of the way in which the song's range matches the emotion of the song.
10. "Solace of You," Living Colour: excellent song that I think is unduly overlooked as a beautiful love song.
11. "Wherever You Are," Neil Finn: had to include Neil, and though the song borders on stalking, I thought it was good.
12. "Anniversary Song," Cowboy Junkies: I sang this at my cousin's wedding, and still feel it's one of the best non-cheesy love songs of all time.
13. "I'm Kissing You," Des'ree: I largely included this because it's in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, but also because it is so pretty.
14. "Allelujah," Fairground Attraction: you can never have enough Eddi--this song expresses the beginnings of love and has the best line of "we'll kiss the first of a million kisses."
15. "Before Today," Everything but the Girl: my attempt at more up tempo songs. Good song.
16. "There," The Innocence Mission: I wanted to include Karen Paris's voice because it is so beautiful, and this song is so pretty.
17. "Good Fortune," PJ Harvey: more rocking, with a great chorus hook.
18. "Message to My Girl," Split Enz: though old, I think it's a great love pop song. I included it in my wedding remarks because I love how the lyrics express the difficulties we have saying love sometimes.
